It's that time of year to go and check out my hunting stands/blinds to make sure everything is in good condition. I am going to replace some ratchet staps on one of my stands that has been in the woods for eight years now. So I was wondering if all ratchet straps are the same or do I need to buy one made to be left outside year round? I was going to buy some cheap ones from homedepot for $14 but sold I get something better?

I would atleast get the nice ones made buy Reese or the like. The cheap ones have really flimsy straps. I pulled a truck out of the woods with a Titan ratchet strap from autozone, had that strap 8 years now and still kicking.

They are not all the same. Now my experience is exclusive tying loads I to pickup trucks but some are definitely better than others. Everyone I've used degrades if left out in the sun though.

Like most things, I avoid the cheapest option when it comes to ratchet straps. We just swapped out a bunch of ours yesterday. On average, they had been on the stands for about 4 years. On several, as soon as the knife started to barely slice into one side, the entire strap snapped. We check them them before and after every season, but didn't get around to loosening them after last year since we were planning on replacing anyway.

For ladder supports or ladder sticks, I like to use 1" straps with at least a 500 pound working load, if not higher. For the straps actually holding the stand to the tree, I like some solid 1-1/2" (or bigger straps).
