Like many of you I hear about courses both good and bad. However some things are not acceptable. If your class, during the live fire portion, doesn’t have at least a 1 instructor/RSO to 4 student ratio on the firing line you should rethink your participation.

I have heard of up to 15 people with only 1 instructor during live fire. Stay safe people.

****I've never seen the 1 to 15 ratio but am aware of 1 to 10 or so, which I felt was very unsafe. I'm an RSO and W&C instructor at my local range, but have sat in on other instructors courses to see how others present material, run their lines, etc..

I'm pretty sure we had less in the Marine Corps but I remember one time I was at a civilian range in Hawaii and the RSO went up to the shooter next to me who had fired three duds in a revolver and all thee bullets were lodged in the barrel and the next round was a full power load. Luckily they cleared the barrel before he pulled the trigger and ****** himself up and likely me and others too.

My classes are max of 9 students (usually 8) with 3/1 ratio.

My assistants also actually hold NRA RSO status, not just some guys off the street watching.

This is one of the added value items that make some classes more worthwhile for the students. If you have to eat 16 hours of $h!t, it better be GOOD $h!t.

Yet AGC runs safely with a 50:1 ratio. USPSA action shooting is 20:1. Public ranges operate at infinite:1. Unless teaching absolute newbs (who deserve 1:1) why put out a blanket statement?

He's taking about training, where absolute newbs are often a possibility reality.

AGC doesn't really operate that way...and every badge holder is supposed to be their own RSO anyway.

I would argue that USPSA, IDPA, etc. are actually running at 1:1. Heck many matches I have been to have 2 RSO's running 1 shooter.

Meh, back in the '70's, when Bullseye shooting was big, I used to get one a week where someone fired sometimes 5 rounds and they were stuck in the barrel. Bullseye shooters were notorious for loading the lightest loads they could shoot accurately in their 1911's and S&W revolvers. Some never learned. :sad20:

^This^ is correct; any comparison between ratio of RSO to multiple students *live-firing simultaneously* and a lone competitor being followed and observed closely by a RSO with timer in hand AND a second RSO with scoring device is mis-application, at best.
