My opinion was published in the Baltimore Sun Newspaper today!!!!!! It is only in the print edition so far. Here is a copy.
A level playing field for concealed carry.
It is time for Maryland to have a level playing field regarding personal protection. Why is there such a disparity in the haves - those allowed to obtain a concealed carry permit - and the have nots - those who aren't and thus are restricted in their ability to protect themselves and their families outside of their homes?
In light of recent federal court rulings striking down Maryland’s requirement that law abiding citizens need a “good and substantial reason” to obtain a concealed carry permit, why do Maryland’s elected officials continue to waste tax dollars by continuing to appeal and deny citizens the ability to protect themselves and their families?
Every state that touches Maryland currently allows its law abiding citizens to obtain a concealed carry permit by following a reasonable application and licensing procedure. In fact 40 of the 50 states allow their citizens to carry concealed firearms for protection.
Documented recent threats, robberies or assaults can get a law abiding citizen a concealed carry permit. So in fact the vast majority of citizens looking to protect themselves and their families outside of their home must actually have been a victim of a crime before they can legally provide for their own protection.
I am not sure about the rest of you but this does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. I have to be a victim of a crime before I can legally better protect myself from a potential threat.
I am truly disappointed in Maryland’s resistance to follow the guidance given by a federal court and the lawmaker’s determination to continue to deny the average citizen the right to protect themselves outside of their home. Remember 40 other states allow for their citizens to better protect their familes. Marylanders [should} not stand for this unfair and inequitable arrangement any longer.
