How do you decide which ROT to use for .308? This is going to be for a EBR that I plan on building from scratch.

You can shoot a lighter bullet in a faster twist barrel (within reason) with no problem. 168's will fly fine out of a 1:10...but they won't do well at long range (beyond 600), no matter the twist rate.

No need, a 1:12 will be fine. As for the distance thing I never heard that before & mine was fine out to 850 (furthest I could find to shoot)
I had a custom rem 700 with a Shilen 1:12 HB & it shot like a dream. I almost went crazy trying to get 1/4 MOA out of it with 168 Gr Matchkings, the best it would do was 1/3 MOA.:lol2:

So a great big long boat of a bullet will retain spin longer than a heavy pudgy bullet of the same mass?

No. I would think all bullets retain spin to the same degree. In fact, they lose very little spin in flight.

You need more spin to stabilize the "great big long boat of a bullet" than the "heavy pudgy bullet of the same mass".

See the link I posted above.
