I have had a Utah carry permit for nearly 10 years. I went through one renewal process and was pleased that there was no additional training required and Utah notified me in a timely manner so they could collect my renewal fee (which I gladly paid).

I have since gotten carry permits from: MD, PA and FL.

I know that MD required an 8 hour training course at each renewal.

For those of you that have renewed permits in MD, PA and FL,

    1. Is there additional training required for renewals
    2. Does the jurisdiction remind you in a timely manner to process and approve the renewal or should I keep the renewals on my calendar and track them myself?
3 Any other wrinkles I should keep in mind when planning for my permit renewals in those 3 jurisdictions?

No training. You have to watch a video online. Letter well ahead of time.

PA has no training but I've never done a renewal so unsure about notification

It's my understanding that a non-resident of PA who wants a PA permit must possess a permit in their home state. Our MD permits will expire (2-3 years, depending on date of issue relative to your next birthday) before PA's permit (five years, static). I was told by the woman who issued my permit that I will need to send the York County Sheriff's Office an updated copy of my renewed MD permit for my PA permit to remain valid following the expiration of my initial MD permit.

Yup, I had to sign a piece of paper to show that I understood to do that.

    Yes, correct.
If you don't, PA will see that your MD permit has expired and revoke your PA permit. You simply need to mail a copy to them. Call the Sheriff's office in whatever county you choose (I used Adams) to get the address and info. Very easy process, and very important.

I planned on doing this as well, but the Adams County Sheriff's Office never mentioned it (it makes sense though).

When I was a PA resident, renewals were as simple as filling out the same form and going through the same process (except I checked "renewal" instead of "new application").

Is there a notice of the revocation? Because that's not what I was told when I originally received my PA permit from Bedford County and what their Sheriff's Office just told me when I called.

The Deputy I just spoke with was very knowledgeable and immediately and authoritatively stated that PA does not check on expired resident-state licenses and as long as my MD CCW renewed I am GTG. When I originally received my PA License I was told that as long as I renewed my MD CCW prior to its expiration no action was required on my part...

At the bottom of the Application, question 33, we sign that if we knowingly become ineligible (ie: resident license not renewed) to CCW we must promptly notify the PA Sheriff.

About 2 1/2 months prior to renewing my Maryland Permit (July 2022) I received a letter from the York County Sheriff’s Office reminding me to send a copy of my renewed permit when I get it to maintain my Pennsylvania permit.

My MD CCW was renewed in May, 2022 which was mid-term of my PA License. The PA Sheriff confirmed my PA License is still valid and was not revoked or lapsed.

    Yep, there you go:

    02-May-2023
Good afternoon John. You are good until May of 2025 with your PA CCW permit. Now if you are ever denied in Maryland or not a current holder in Maryland, then you would need to turn in your PA CCW permit. Just because you had to renew you Maryland permit, it does not affect your PA permit unless you do not renew when you are supposed to. I hope that answers your question. Sincerely Sheriff Emerick

    Sheriff Wayne E. Emerick Jr.

    Bedford County Sheriff

Sure sounds like each jurisdiction has it's own "rules".

What's it hurt to send your updated permit date to the Sherriff's dept. you received the permit from just to CYA?

I got something in the mail from UT a few days back. Alas, it was a reminder to renew. Here I thought it would be the renewed permit, having applied maybe a week before receiving the letter.

Don't ever rely on a state to send renewal notice. Put it on a calendar.

FL, UT, PA, MA, ME, NH, VA, AZ, TX, and CT do not require any renewal training or range requalification.

MD, NJ, and D.C. require a renewal class and live fire requalification.

RI requires requalification depending on what agency you applied with.
