I just saw a link where they want to change the 100 yard border down to 100 foot, They still want to make themself exempt from their own laws. While this is a little better but it is still not good enough. They still do not define what county buildings will be affected, so in my case the county well/ pump house would make it illegal for me to out in my back yard with a gun in my truck to load my hunting equipment or unload a deer and same with my neighbors. Please go to the county page and leave a message telling them they need to stop pushing 2022-14 because it is bad all together. And if they feel they have to do something then just limit it to just inside the county office building or with-in the offices space the county rents.

The local fire/rescue buildings with county paid crews may be affected by this too

From my twenty-two years of experience in the Armed Forces, twelve of those as a Security/Law Enforcement Specialist guarding and protecting some of our nation’s most sensitive areas/personnel. The proposed bill will not deter or curve crime and provides no means or plans to enforce it. In fact, it may very well do more harm than good. Mass shooting events and terrorist targets center around areas where the public gathers, the public is not allowed to possess firearms (it is easy to identify and neutralize armed/unarmed uniformed personnel) and will draw media attention. If this bill passes you will have in one stroke increased the threat level of these facilities/premises, workers, and patrons in a negative fashion. Because you have eliminated the unknown factor from the planning equation. It will cause second and third effects, on the hunting/tourism industry, businesses, and the community at large. For example, MD State Certified Hunter Education Instructors will find it harder if not impossible to teach classes, which I might add includes firearm safety training. Which will no doubt increase hunt/firearm accidents because the courses could not be provided at today’s frequency. Even with the newly proposed one hundred feet, vs one hundred yards, you are making it hard to get to a firing range to legally maintain firearm proficiency or prepare for the hunting season. One could not simply drive past the Court House, Government Building, Board of Elections, any school, or any Fire Station as this bill prevent a person from doing so. This bill would close off the only route out/back to my home, as I would have to go past EMS/Fire Station 12 or the Wade Elementary School. Several states have attempted to do a similar thing, some are being challenged in the courts or have lost. For example a federal judge on Monday ruled New Jersey did not have the “historical tradition” of regulating where a concealed carry permit can be used, much as they are now attempting to do. I plan on being at the meeting in opposition and have submitted two pages of comments. The list of properties is 5 pages long and I suspect is not all inclusive. May understandably is they heard the grumbling in regards to pump stations and park. However I will believe it when I see.

They dont care about our concerns. They care about their ability to “tell” everyone what to do that fits their agenda. Their “rights” as elected leaders usurp ours. Its our fault, we have let them .

Hopefully we have a large turn out tomorrow whether people intend to speak or not. I’m not a great speaker, but I intend to let my voice be heard. Whether they listen or not will be seen tomorrow. I never thought Charles county residents would be put in this situation, but here we are. It’s time to fight for our rights and fight we will. The county thought they had opposition to the mask mandate. Oh boy are they in for it with 2A. This has the attention of National groups and state groups , and this is a much more heated issue than the mask mandate was.

At todays comissioners meeting they modified it again. They took off the distance limitations and changed to IN buildings. They left in that a member of the Board of County Comissioners can carry (no mention of Md HGP approval and it doesnt say if their staff is included). The chief of central services has authority (government speak for increase duties to give a raise?) Why not the sheriffs office?

I'm only 2 miles away and had planned on attending tomorrow, but COVID in my household. I will try to join virtually.

The Charles County Commissioners are in an absolute $hit show right now on multiple fronts, I just saw another clip on ABC news. They are trying to remove each other, rampid racial discrimination allogations against Afro American Thomasina Coates. I hope we keep our feet on their throats tomorrow....

Ruben is an attorney and the president of the Charles County Commissioners who wants to fire the county administrator so he can hire Delegate Davis for that position. Once hired, she will fire the county attorney and hire a drunk attorney to fill the spot. Guess who is the drunk attorney? Both positions are well over $100k a year.

Yep, and the news report today showed that the Commissioners asked for a vote to potentially remove Thomasina Coates and the Commissioner President Reuben Collins struck it down stating it was outside of the normal practice.

They don’t care, it has nothing to do with saving lives.

    Charles County Amends Bill 2022-14

In late November, the Commissioners of Charles County, Maryland had initially proposed a ban on the possession of firearms within 100 yards of “a building owned or operated by Charles County government or the Board of Charles County,” even for carry permit holders. Your feedback to the County has seemingly made an impact, as they’ve since amended the proposed Bill to remove the 100-yard buffer zone around government properties, as well as the ban on possession in County parks.

Even still, there are problems with the Bill and we still stand in opposition to it. Read our full testimony against Bill 2022-14: https://bit.ly/3jXPTyk

The Bill is slated to be heard tonight in a hearing that begins at 6pm. The newly-released agenda reflects that Bill 2022-14 has been amended.
Testimony can be submitted in person or virtually. The County’s public notice provides these instructions:

In-person: Speaker sign-up will begin 30 minutes (1/2 hour) prior to the hearing at the Charles County Government Building (200 Baltimore Street, La Plata) and will end at the commencement of the hearing.

Virtually: Call 240-776-6709 between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 11, 2023, to register to speak. Once registered, individuals will receive a virtual link to testify between 6pm– 9pm. after in-person speakers testify. If you are not available to speak when you are called, we have the right to move on to the next caller. Each speaker will be allotted three (3) minutes to speak.

Written or voicemail comments may be submitted in lieu of oral testimony, or to expand upon oral testimony, and will be accepted Friday, December 23, 2022, starting at 8 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 :

Postal Mail/Hand Delivery: Commissioners of Charles County, 200 Baltimore Street, La Plata, Maryland 20646. *Comments sent by mail must be received no later than January 10, 2023.

Those individuals with special needs may contact the Commissioners’ Office at voice phone number 301-645-0550 or Maryland Relay Service TDD 1-800-735-2258 for assistance. Additional questions or concerns may be directed to Danielle Mitchell, Office of the County Attorney, 301-645-0555 or mitcheld@charlescountymd.gov.

The agenda for that hearing can be found HERE.

It can be watched live here:

MSI stands against the bill and we strongly encourage Charles County residents to testify in opposition to this misguided legislation.

MD Wear and Carry permits are “not valid where firearms are prohibited by law” and thus carrying in violation of this county ordinance likewise creates a risk for prosecution under MD Code, Criminal Law, § 4-203. While a violation of the proposed ordinance would be punishable by up to one-year imprisonment or a fine of $1,000, a violation of Section 4-203 is punishable by up to three years in prison, and therefore any conviction under Section 4-203 would create a lifetime disqualification under State and federal law. That would be true regardless of the actual sentence.
