There's a couple of videos out there that show the dissasembly process of the 1911A1* using only the gun itself and ammunition. That started my love affair.

*Usually applies only to USGI variants, haven't found any documentation in regards to commercial models being built to the same standard.

Taking it apart is pretty easy... getting it back together is where people fall by the wayside :)

Don't think I'll drift my rear sight off or unstake the front sight though.

Somebody spent some serious time building that solid model and doing all the animation!

Mopar: I ran across an old field manual (can't find it now) that detailed the disassembly w/o tools. Pretty cool.
The Johnson M1941 is another that comes to mind that doesn't require tools.

I've found YouTube videos to be extremely helpful in a variety of areas including firearm assembly/disassembly. But I learned a hard lesson recently when I followed a very good video demonstrating how to fully disassemble a WWII era Luger/P08. When I was ready to reassemble it I couldn't find a video. I went back to the disassembly video and discovered that several comments asked about reassembly. The response was, "just follow the video in reverse."

World of Guns is a free "game" available through Steam that has that sort of detailed disassembly and reassembly for a huge catalogue of modern and vintage firearms. And you can then practice by clicking through the pieces. It also has a feature that lets you see an x-ray view in slow motion as the gun is fired.
