My kids went through the NRA sponsored rifle safety class/small bore shooting league back in May. They are small statured...too small to use the provided 22 bolt action training rifles the club has. Fortunately, I had purchased Savage Lil Rascal single shot 22 bolt actions when they were very young. The kids absorbed the safety info like a sponge and to say that they shot well is an understatement. Both rifles are equipped with peep sights and my youngest was able to ring the 12" steel gong at 100 yards repeatedly and they both were hitting the 4" and 8" gongs at 50 yards while standing, sitting, and prone. Too say that I am proud of them is an understatement. This week the kids and I were at the range with a buddy, who brought along several different 22 semis...a Ruger 10/22 carbine with open sights and a Marlin Model 60 with a scope. They had never shot with a scope before, but they caught on very quickly. They were ringing steel at 15yards shot after shot surprisingly quickly. The only problem was is that neither have the upper body strength to hold either rifle up on their own. I stood to the side and let them rest the fore end in my hand. They would tell me "up, down, or left, right" and break the shot when they were on target. Afterwards they said that they wanted a rifle that would "ping ping ping ping" as opposed to their single shots. They are able to handle the Savage Lil Rascal's by themselves, but that's about it for now. Does anyone make a small, light weight 22 semi similar in weight and size to the Lil Rascal? I'd love to find one for them since they enjoy shooting semi 22s...I hope to keep them interested in shooting.
