Deer debate stirring emotions on both sides
Wildlife: Residents are at odds over how to control the area's growing population.

The idea of controlling the population through killing might not appeal to everyone, but it is safe and effective and "it doesn't cost taxpayers anything," says Steve Huettner, past president of the Maryland Sportsmen's Association and a Glen Arm resident.

"People get all worked up and emotional about hunting, with this vision of hunters as knuckle-dragging Neanderthals," Huettner says. "But we're doctors. We're lawyers. We're plumbers. We're teachers. And we're the first true conservationists."

"Deer are cute," he says. "But it's gotten to the point where it's destroying the diversity in the ecosystem."

What do you say when one of those insufferable, naive soccer-mom types asks, "how could you?"

    Easy:

Every deer that you have ever seen, and will ever see, will die from one of the following causes:

    - disease
    - starvation
    - predator
    - road kill
    - hunter

...of all these possible outcomes, which do YOU think is the most humane?

Despite basically living in soccer mom central, any time a discussion about deer comes up it's always been about how annoying they are on the roads. We get enough of them out in the suburbs to an extent that people view them as annoyances, not just cute and cuddly.

....lethal injection while the sounds of nature is played to them and a soft green light like the sun bouncing off the forest leaves in the morn glows all about.
