    I'd get the .22 rifle. I shoot mine more than anything else these days and don't feel bad about how much ammo I use. If it's something you can use to get your family together; there's your answer. I don't think you will regret it. You can start putting some money aside for your upgrade and in a few months go ahead and get it.

    Buy stuff to bring the family into the fold, especially your child. Family bonding is infinitely more valuable and important than any tacticool or competition-cool equipment.

    Everyone in my family goes to the range. Each person, wife & children, can shoot every one of our firearms effectively enough for self defense.

    Infinitely more valuable than anything "tacticool."

    Bring 'em into the fold!

    I'd at least get a 22 riffle, tech your kid about weapons, then its a win - win.
    Get to spend more time with family & end up with more time at the range.
