    OK...

I know that 45 ACP is the same thing as 45 AUTO.

    But...

Are those two the same as 45 COLT and 45 LONG COLT? I think the answer is no, but I'm unsure.

    Please answer...

Yup, you have the right info now...

BTW the best reloading investment you can make is to buy a good reloading book...

The answers to all your questions is in there...

    I like Lyman's Reloading Handbook 49th Edition...

Back in the old horse cavalry days, 45 Colt could mean either 45 Schofield aka "The Short Colt" or 45 Long Colt since both were issued to troops.

Colt SAA can chamber either the shorter Schofield or the Long Colt cartridges

S&W No 3 Schofield can only chamber the short cartridge

Army Quartermasters started the use of the 45 Long Colt name to differentiate between the cartridges

Today, ammo manufacturers use 45 Schofield for the short and 45 Long Colt or 45 Colt for the longer.

ok, but what about Colt 45 longnecks, bottles, and cans? Interchangeable? Refillable?

And then there were the Baltimore Colts vs the Indianapolis Colts. Johnny Unite-us.

    Aw, sorry, forget it.

Can somebody please explain the practical difference between .357 S&W and .357 Sig?

There is really no 45 long colt anymore. Ever heard of 45 short colt? Nope

Just say 45 colt. Check out ammo boxes: 45 Colt

Now where are my long johns.

45 long colt and 45 colt are old style cowboy rounds usually fired from revolvers, longer than 44 mags. 45 ACP are usually fired from autos (unless using moon clips) and are short and fat. 45 GAP are slightly bigger than 45 ACP and have more recoil.
