I decided to commit to hunting the early muzzleloader season coming up this week with the White Rifles Javalina pistol.
It likes the 45/40 sabot and White Powerstar 350gr spitzer bullet sitting on top of 55 grains of T73F.
Triple-7 3F is high energy, and comparable to about 70gr of black powder, so this load is roughly similar to shooting a 45/70 black powder cartridge out of a pistol. The short 14" barrel of the Javalina reduces MV as compared to say a long-barreled Sharps.
The pistol gets around 1180 fps, where a BPCR in 45/70 gets around 1350-1400 fps with slugs in the 350-400gr range.
Recoil is spirited enough that it sprained my thumb after about a dozen shots at the range last week.
Fortunately, after a few days off it's as right as rain.
The pistol is currently zeroed for 50 yards.
Here's my first 100 yard target shot last week off a sandbag rest.
I was guessing that the drop at 100 yards would be 3-4 inches and aimed where the X is marked.
Turns out that the drop is about 6-inches. This was later confirmed by a ballistic calculation.
I'd be happy with three shots into 5-inches with a 2X scope on a rifle, so I'm very please with this performance with a pistol.
I don't plan on shooting at deer past about 50 yards with this gun.
