Looking for a link/thread on rules for face to face sales in Maryland. Have a friend who wants to buy a regular old shot gun from another friend. Not sure if this needs to go through an FFL or not. I thought everything in Maryland is required to go through an FFL, but I'm not absolutely certain.

    Thanks

Use the Bill of Sale. It shows the Seller and Buyer are acting in Good Faith. It also gives the Buyer some protection.

Heres Why. Lets say you buy a gun FTF that dosent require a FFL and you have no Bill of Sale to show HOW you acquired it. Now, on the way home from the range you get pulled over. During the stop the LEO notices a Cased Firearm and finds reason to perform a Search. That LEO will call in the #'s on that gun and check to see if its stolen.

If that gun comes up as Stolen, or worse off, a gun stolen at the scene of a Murder. You now have a SERIOUS Problem. You are in posession of stolen property, with NO Info of who you bought it from, or if you even bought it. Perhaps YOU are the one they think is responsible.

    Its bad news all around.

Get a Bill of Sale to cover your butt. It covers the sellers butt too incase a prohibited person buys a gun against your knowledge. Your Bill of Sale can ask them if they are prohibited and it shows Good Faith on the Sellers part in case the Buyer does something bad with the gun and it comes back to the seller.

Good post by Chad. There is a list of long guns that are specifically 'regulated'. Any gun on that list must go through an FFL (or state police barracks). There is also an approved handgun list, but the important thing to remember is that all handguns are 'regulated' and require FFL (or barracks), to do the transfer.

There are a few exceptions to these rules, but you probably wouldn't be asking this question if any of those special conditions applied to you.
