As a first time shotgun owner, I tried both the 870 and the 500, and after weeks of research I went with the Mossberg. I picked up the 54243 Field and Deer with 28" vr and 24" cantilevered rifled slug, with scope and chokes from Dick's last weekend for $300. I found the Action release was easier to use (back of the trigger guard vs in front of guard) and the safety was more convenient to use on the top. After 100 rounds this weekend I am happy with the choice, but I am taking it to the shop to make it fit a little better.

How much do you think for a decent 870 express? And I don't really have a problem going for used, as long as it's not too abused I've had good luck with used guns before (except for an old winchester 30-30 that was just a bear, but that's for another day).

Mine was $150. I have a 2003 870 Express Magnum. I wouldn't pay anymore than $200, and even then, it should be in pretty good shape.

    Benelli Supernova Tactical. Pure Sexy.

    +1

My first 12 gauge was a Benelli Supernova Tactical. Couldn't be happier. I've fired 2 3/4", 3" and 3 1/2" shot and shells downrange and I've never had a problem. My buddy has an 870 and its a good gun but it doesn't do great with certain brands of shells. Another buddy of mine has a Winchester and I really like his shotgun too. I've never seen it have a problem.

I love the Supernova so much I'm planning on buying another one to shoot skeet/bird hunt with. I've done it with the Tactical, but I find it hard to acquire clay pigeons with my ghost ring sights. Plus I'm sure a longer barrel and removable chokes would be nice. The Tactical also has a pistol grip which I love but is probably not ideal for skeet/bird hunting. The Tactical is great for HD and for shooting slugs. I've had alot of success shooting Brenneke rifled slugs at ranges up to 100 yds. Haven't tried anything further than that.

    Good luck!

Just my opinion, a pump should be able to shoot all brand of ammunition that's correct to the chamber size.

There must be something going on in the 870. If it's a modern day Express a rough chamber/burrs having issues with the steel based hulls after being shot.

What are you going to use the gun for? If you are doing the HD thing I would recommend one thing, for hunting and depending on what you're hunting I would recommend something else. For clays yet an entirely different gun. You didn't mention what that budget actually is. A budget to one person might mean a gun just to say you have a gun and lean it against a tree and take pictures (sorry August) and those you can buy for a song and a dance. To others a budget might take on a different meaning for a gun that will be dedicated to a specific task and shot on a regular basis.... it could be a good basic quality gun that won't really break the bank up to something very well made and costly in some eyes, yet still within someone's budget, whatever that is.

not sure if they make them anymore or how much used ones cost, but ithaca m37 is an excellent pump gun for bird hunting and skeet. bottom eject is nice for us lefties.

I'd say how I feel but my post would just be deleted AND I'd be feeding a troll that's already been banned once.

you could always show support by posting a "Shotguns leaning against trees porn" thread. I'd start one, but the apt neighbors may take exception to the 11-87 leaning against one of the parking lot trees. Our popped collar out of state scattergunphile may get a kick out of it.

Just trying to call a spade a spade... know what I mean Vern?

i'd say you were just joking in good nature with some good points in the last post until this one. just asking, "what is the main use going to be so i can point you in the right direction? also, what kind've budget are you working with...2-300/ 5-700 or 1000+???" could've been a pretty useful post.
