First Mini-14

I picked up my first Mini-14 today. I have never shot one, much less had one. It is just the ranch rifle version, with the 5 round magazine, but I picked up a couple of 20 rounders from Bass Pro. I am excited to take it to the range. Just thought I would share

This. I can keep all my shots on a 2' x 2' target at 100 yds offhand, I figure that's pretty good with this gun with my eyes.

This is what I heard, I also heard in the newer series (582) Ruger has made a serious attempt at fixing the accuracy issues, so we shall see.

The newer tapered barrels are more accurate. Mine's a 581 series 16" barrel and with iron sights it keeps on pace with my AR.

Good luck with that, I hope they work out for you.

Try to get factory (ie, Ruger-made) mags if you can. Nobody else seems to be able to get them right for the mini, and ProMag in particular can't seem to get mags for other firearms right, so....

ProMag Steel mags for the Mini-14 are good, the plastic ones are the ones to avoid. I've never had a problem with their steel mags, especially the 20-round versions, I have three of them.

Yeah, I had heard stay away from the plastic mags as well, but that the steel one's were okay. We will see...

Luckily I've stockpiled pretty well for my AR's, now I just need to get rid of this irrational fear of falling below a certain level of reserve ammo

Cool! My guy tossed a couple of spare 20 mags for his Mini onto my latest order from Ruger and they came yesterday. I haven't shot it yet but maybe I'll ask to take that one along the next trip to the range.
