What I can't figure out is that he saw firsthand what happened to the Jews of Nazi Germany and still thought it was a good idea to keep guns out of the hands of the avg citizen.

I was brought up to let people rest in peace.

But I will make exceptions for his type who did everything they could to keep others from living in peace.

Addition by subtraction. Christie will surely disappoint. He'll probably do a Lincoln Chaffee and turn to the DemocRat side. Officially, I mean.

Bad thing is, Chris Christie gets to pick the replacement.

How is that worse than allowing the voters of New Jersey to choose Lautenberg's replacement? You get a tool either way. Plus, I don't know specifically about New Jersey, but a lot of states have a provision that an appointed replacement has to belong to the same party as the person being replaced.

Chris Christie's Lautenberg Dilemma Is 2013-as-2016 All Over Again

Christie is screwed no matter which way he goes ...

So, if Christie appoints a right-winger, he angers the Democrats he needs to be reelected. If he appoints a Democrat, which he probably won't, he infuriates the Republican base he would need in the 2016 Republican primary. But splitting the difference won't work, either. Salon's Steve Kornacki points out that appointing a non-controversial old Republican as a caretaker for the seat is not without risk. The last time a Republican New Jersey governor did that a Democrat won the seat. His name was Frank Lautenberg.
