Free HQL Class, Annapolis, November 10th

There will be a free HQL class on November 10th, 1100-1500 in Annapolis. Max capacity is 20 people. Bring your own weapon and safe ammunition. PM with name, email and contact number.

Required to have the HQL, but exempt from the training component

Someone who completed a firearms safety training course approved by the Secretary of the Department of Maryland State Police.

Has completed a course of instruction in the competency and safety of firearms as prescribed under Natural Resources Article, §10-301.1, Annotated Code of Maryland. Application for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Hunter Safety Course Certificate can be obtained from here and may be used in lieu of Qualified Handgun Instruction.


Is currently a qualified handgun instructor.

Is an honorably discharged member of the armed forces of the United States or National Guard.

Is an employee of an armored car company who has a handgun permit issued by MSP.

Lawfully owns a regulated firearm. If you already own a handgun or assault weapon prior to October 1, 2013, you do not have to complete the training to apply for the Handgun Qualification License.

Retired military are exempt from the HQL in its entirety. Former military are exempt from the training requirement for the HQL.

Any former military who want to go through the class anyway, and get some range time and marksmanship instruction are welcome to attend.

Still spots available if anyone is interested (surprised it didn't fill up quickly, but perhaps the requirement wasn't as onerous as everyone thought it would be). The class will be taught by a Navy small arms instructor and will cover the MSP required topics, as well as some advanced marksmanship skills for those who already have experience with handguns.

Got feedback that a lot of folks don't have (or have access to) a handgun (duh!). That being said, there will be handguns available for use during the class.

Surprised at such small turnout, but a great day on the range. Don't think it's worth it to offer again, just based on the turnout...though if anyone needs their training requirement fulfilled, there are plenty of range days in the spring.

Huge thanks to fa18hooker for holding this today. It was a beautiful day and the only hitch was trying to keep the turkeys off the range!
