I Know that Speer makes shot shell capsules but I have heard bad things about them too.

Has anyone done this? Any successful recipes?

Any advice. Just wanted to try it for fun.

So your saying that hitting a balloon, on the first shot, while blind folded, at 100yds is out of the question?

Well you have ruined my dream sir.

Growing up, I knew a WWII and Korean War vet who said the 45 ACP snake shot was really useful in the Pacific where they really had a big rat problem. I think I still have a couple of boxes of surplus WWII 45 ACP some place.

As an experiment, go ahead and do it. We all have to play around with difference loads.

I made some of these and some of the three 80gn slug loads back in the '80's when they were written up in the gun mags. You won't hurt anything by crimping a gas check over shot but the results are not worth it. The only shot shells that I had that worked well were crimped like Acorn blanks. There was a die for making these in .45 cal but it was so expensive I never bought it. Make sure you use a really fast powder because you need all the pressure you can get. (the light weight of the shot does not let pressure build up)

My experience is that shot shells work better in short barrels and you have to shoot two or three rounds to ensure coverage within 10 feet which is the distance I did my tests.

Could you take a picture of those?

    I'd love to see them.

    Way too cool.

You can buy the capsules as a component if you want to handload on purpose . The capsules hold more shot than is possible using gaschecks .

The factory CCI ones will do pretty much all that is possible with handgun shotshells .

One of the biggest issues is coping with rifling. The spin induced by rifling tends to blow the patterns out. I shot three gun with a 12 gauge and 1-1/4 ounce of 6s and a rifles barrel and could not knock over a 6" x 6" x 3/8" steel plate at 10 yards. Went to a second shotgun and even cylinder bore decisively flattened those targets.

Yup, the rifling really screws up the shot.
