This story from a British tabloid is altogether too believable.
Idiot brandishes weapon
Sometimes I think we should criminalize violation of the four basic rules of gun handling:
1) Always treat a weapon as if it were loaded.
2) Always enforce muzzle discipline, NEVER allow the muzzle to be directed toward anything you don't want to destroy
3) Always be certain of your target and environs, including those down range of (behind) the target.
4) Always keep your finger away from the trigger (out of the trigger guard) until you are ready to destroy your target (see items one through three) and only then engage the trigger.
If people would just realize that carrying is a lifestyle change that involves owning up to the responsibility for the safety of yourself and others then it might make legislatures and the public less fearful of firearms in general.
I have never heard of any accidental shooting that cannot be attributed to some negligence in following the four rules. Perhaps the only "gun control" laws we need are mandatory sentencing for folks who can't control their guns. If we lock up all the idiots who think that carrying is a fundamental right but don't realize there's also a fundamental responsibility that comes with that right, then maybe the rest of us could get on without all kinds of constrictions and carry laws.
End rant.
