I thought that a rational look at the problem might be received a little bit better. But then politicians have been know to embrace fantasy over fact. But it might sway those supporting the bans as many just want to do something. However that something would be better spent on early detection and treatment for the mentally ill.

If you're not familiar with the books (Freakonomics or Superfreakonomics) they are interesting reads. But the blog and podcast are free.

To summarize the podcast, they point out that the previous awb had very little mpact if any. And they also point out the current proposals will probably be ineffective too.

This was a great podcast from a very smart, apolitical economist looking at the issue as pragmatically as possible. It's proof why economists make awful politicians - they don't tell you just what you want to hear, but what hounded to know.
