Just bought a Maverick 88 Security Combo 12 gauge (18.5” & 28” barrels) and heard they are prone to rusting…

Any suggestions or ideas to keep them rust free?

    Thanks in advance!

The Hornady One Shot appears to tie, or nearly tie with the 'non lubricant', but also does very well for lubrication.

That test is a little perplexing to me. The last time I saw a very similar one, the top peformers were Eezox and Breakfree Collector, and Froglube, WD specialist and many others were way down on the list.

    Thanks for this.

I tried Frog Lube many years ago. Followed directions. Used it on a handful of guns. All of them malfunctioned reliably. Unless it was a very warm day, everything just jammed up.

I recently went through/sorted my pistol collections for a move and found two which had been sitting for at least 15 years, I had to heat them in an oven to remove the slides. To be fair, there wasn’t any rust that I could see or pick up on a cleaning patch.

But Frog lube might as well be super glue for all it’s worth.

For general lubrication, I’m a Mobil 1 guy, but for long-term protection, I’ll stick with WD Specialist or Hornady One-Shot.

I have been using Eezox for years and I’m a believer. I even use it on my tools and never had an issue with rust.

I have a couple Mossberg 500s as well as a Maverick 88 and the only thing that I really use for them is the Hornady one shot. The test that was posted led me to that direction and the only thing on those shotguns that really is prone to rust is the barrel which I just spray down with some Hornady one shot and it evaporates. I do use it as lubrication on the shotgun and I have never had an issue on the pump guns. The shotgun I use for clays is a TriStar Viper G2. I clean that and lubricate it with Hornady one shot. It is a gas piston shotgun, and Hornady used to sell a heavy duty version of the spray which was twice as thick and I only have about 3/4 of a can left so I use it sparingly on my clay shotgun and I have had the shotgun Maybe 7 years now and have never had a malfunction and once the magazine tube that The Recoil spring goes around is sprayed down, since the Piston rides on it as well, it makes it much much easier to clean. Once I started using the Hornady one shot, I don't use anything else on the shotguns. My Maverick is in long-term storage, but I do check on it every now and then and does not have a speck of rust.

I had one...my first shotgun, I think. Spraying the steel parts with flat or satin black Rustoleum worked very well. I think I ultimately sprayed the aluminum receiver, too.
