I remember jet noise before hush kits. Georgetown in 1965 they'd come screaming down the river to National and you'd just have to stop conversation because you couldn't hear anything else.

If you had a car you could drive to the parking lot at the end of the runway and soak up the takeoff noise. It was quite a rush but I'm paying for it with tinnitus for the rest of my life.

In those days commercial airliners would still have been using straight turbojets rather than turbofans, right?

A loud scream rather than a low roar...

I'm down near North Beach, woke me up and roared for a couple of minutes. Never heard anything that loud from inside the house, lasted a while as he was going away

Ahh, would that be Fleet Carrier Landing Practice by any chance? Us old guys aren't up on the current abbreviations. :innocent0

    Field Carrier Landing Practice.
Any FCLP wouldn’t have anything to do with jet noise around here.

It's the sound of freedom. I love the sound of a jet turbine. Sprinkle a little bit of Whop-whop-whop from a chopper and I'm in the zone.
