the Dear Leader has proposed a 10 cent property tax increase.
    $400k home = an increase of $400.00
Trying to raise $220 million for the schools.

I thought that our taxes were supposed to pay for schools
I thought that the Lottery was supposed to pay for schools
I thought that gambling was supposed to pay for the schools
I thought that the Feds gave states/counties an S-load of $$ to pay for schools during Covid
I though that sports betting was supposed to pat for the schools
I thought that Cannabis revenue taxes was supposed to pay for the schools

Now, a couple of days before Erlich proposed this increase, he gave Craig Rice a $175k a year salaried job with full benefits, to be the Special Projects Manager. Gave it to him, this position was not posted for any other county employee or outside qualified person to apply to. The County must have been flush with money a week ago.

What happen to all that money for the Kirwan Commission. It's funny they over road the veto for this an then never hear about it again. But we are paying for it big time.

****Yup. It's *never* enough money for the schools, or for everything else that needs to be done, apparently. We could give them a LOT more money or a LOT less money and I wonder really how much of a tangible difference there would be in the performance of the average kid in school, or college acceptance rates, standardized testing, performance in math and English, etc...

I dunno the answer to the above question - all I know is they want/need more money. If I don't pay it, they take my house, and/or plop me in jail which would make me sad, and probably not able to sit for some time. Bummer.

In my best Paulie Walnuts voice, "Not for nuttin...."

Our very large increase in population in the county has not increased the number of tax paying residents in the county.

So they have to increase the taxes on we, who do pay taxes.

FYI - if any of you have kids at Damascus, your remodel was pushed back another 2 years, which means another 4-6 years. I say this as a Poolesville parent who waited for years. As a community we had to bring it the media's attention, keep the pressure on the county at all levels and we still aren not getting a new school. Seneca Valley was the last new school. All others will be remodels. The only exception will be the new Crown High School (Crown/Rio area)

And when they do begin construction, if will be a major C.F. My kids have been gassed out of Poolesville due to the roof tarring that took place DURING school hours. The school cannot meet County, State or OSHA requirements for egress. There is a F'ing fence around 70% of the school. The greatest military minds in the world could not have designed a better fatal funnel.

Again for Damascus, The county is going to let you swing in the breeze while they re-open Woodward HS and remodel Northwood.

    Carroll County!
Oh great! Now we get 10k Mogo refuges moving to Carroll county to save 400 bucks. There goes the neighbor hood.

Wait till they get here and find out Carroll county sucks. Schools are awful and fentanyl is sold at McDonalds. They won’t stay long. Hopefully.

*****For many MoCo folks, it would be for a lot more than $400. $400k doesn't get you much right now for housing, especially if you want a single family home. Property taxes are ridiculous here with a remarkable number of property owners paying over 10k per year in property taxes in parts of the county. Some considerably more than that depending upon the area, and the size of the lot, plus the size of the home itself, etc...

    Ridiculous.

Is that going to be in the cow pasture on the southern part of Downtown Crown?

They were building the new science building when my daughter attended PHS

Didn't they do a lot of upgrading to Damascus High School about 20 odd years ago. We lived in Damascus in the 90's and there was an awful lot of work going on at DHS.

I sure am glad that my kids are out of MCPS schools, 27 and 29 years old.

I haven't looked at the planning for the Crown HS. I will though. I am going to get more involved, I can't just bitch. Booster Club, active in getting an Athletic Trainer at PHS & the 4 other schools that don't have one, upgrades at the Elementary school.

The science building was the only improvement to PHS since my best friend graduated from Poolesville Jr AND Senior HS in the 80's.

A friend at DHS is fighting for their renovation. Last major work was the 80's according to her. I was there for a Bball game, I swear it looks the same as it did in the 80's when my friends went there.

Don't know where you are now, but if you are close, take a cruise around town.

The parasitic tax lords are creeping anywhere you may have material wealth stored. As the carpetbaggers move into your community some move and some stay. It’s just a matter of time anywhere you go.

LOL! With the possible exception of the covid bonanza NONE of that other money increases wha the schools receive. It's alla shll game. For every dollar that the lottery or casinos generate "for the schools" a dollar is siphoned off of the school budget to be stolen, wasted, mismanaged or pissed away. Net gain ZERO. Why is it that no governement entity or department is ever asked to account for what they alredy spent before they whine for more?

Isn’t it the A.D.s job to ensure a trainer is present at all athletic events? Isn’t that MCPS policy?

MoCo isn’t the only one. Every county will need to raise property tax to fund schools according to the new state school funding law.
The poor counties will be bankrupted.

I used to live in Damascus, they did quite a bit of work on the High School in the late 90's, they had fences up around the construction areas. There was a big kerfuffle between Damascus community and the down county areas with respect to spending on schools which caused Damascus HS to be addressed at that time.

Heck, I am HoCo here, and I am pushing close to that between state and county property taxes, garbage and fire. I think with the last triannual property tax reevaluation last year, once it rolls in I think I am at about $9k a year (BTW it was literally single digit dollars under the maximum it can increase under a reassessment. Coincidence? I doubt it).

The property taxes is reason number 2 why I am leaving HoCo once my kids finish up school. I can move 2 miles to Carroll. IIRC the property tax rate is actually slightly higher. But for the same size house and land, my property value would be half. Even if I was in Sykesville and had to pay town taxes, my overall taxes once you account for county income, property and town taxes I'd likely still walk away saving $3000-4000 a year looking at some of the properties just a few miles away.

Which doesn't include that I could pay off the mortgage on my house today, and pay cash for the new home, in the difference in property values, and likely still pocket a few tens of thousands of dollars. Let alone in 10 some years. The savings on mortgage payments is like $30k* a year.

Too crowded. Too many people. Dislike a lot of the local laws. That's really #1 for me. But the tax/out of pocket costs is a real close second.

I doubt I will unless we decide we are staying here. WA/OR or VT/NH/ME are high on our list for retirement. If that ends up happing, I don't think we will move. I don't want to move in 12 years when my kids are all out of the house, and then move again for retirement within 5 years.

*Granted a lot of that $30k a year is principle payments I'd be getting back on the sale some day. I got somewhat lucky and refinanced at 2.98% near the bottom of mortgage rates. So over the life of the loan, IIRC, that makes interest costs about 50% of the amount I borrowed. Of course, earlier in the loan, a lot of that $30k is interest. By the time I could sell the place it should be under half. So moving would save a solid $15-20k a year in mortgage interest and taxes.
