  • Hello.
This morning, a new friend asked me to check out the rifles his father had brought back from WWII.

Would anyone be able to offer their insight to what they see?

I believe they have both have had their stocks either replaced or made to suit hunting or target shooting.

One rifle is a German K98 (This posting) and the other is a Japanese Type 99 7.7mm Arisaka (Please see Part I - Japanese, Type 99, Arisaka? posting)
I had to break the posting up into two parts, as the maximum number of pictures to upload is 10.

German K98? (Please see attached pictures DSC00318-DSC00327):
All numbers appear to match except for what I see as a modified stock.
The stock does have clearance for scope rings, but I am not sure if that is standard for all K98 rifles.
I am not sure if the front sight has been replaced or if it is original.
It's obvious that the rear sight is a Redfield sight.
This is what I found online from the "CE" stamp on top of the receiver:
"CE 43 ,is a K98 Mauser made by J.P. SAUER und Sohn, GEWEHRFABRIK, SUHL , Germany, 1943, WWII"
Eagles are stamped on the side and it appears to bare a 43, for year of manufacture.

Thanks for any information anyone offers.

    Sincerely,
    Dean

Same as I posted on the Arisaka thread, Redfield sights worth more than rifle. Although if all numbers matching someone may give 400 bucks and put it in a good stock to have a mostly matching rifle.

There's a weird bracket across the top of that peep sight that may just be loose (or bent).
It's a strange-looking sight. The elevation knob may be missing too.
