Alright, my budget will probably be around $1,500 for this gun. Have been thinking about the FNH FNX .45 tactical if it makes it to the handgun roster in May or the standard FNH FNX .45. Also thinking about an HK like the USP, the Mark 23, or the HK45. Last place choice right now is the Beretta PX4 Storm in .45. The Beretta PX4 Storm Compact fits my hand well, so I am thinking about the full frame version. Just not the same as the HK or FNH.

My knowledge of handguns and what is out there is pretty slim. Hence, the reason I am asking on here. Haven't shot many different brands to even be able to make an informed decision. Fired a Desert Eagle, which if I can swing it might be a handgun to have some fun with, but nothing for the home defense safe. Have fired a S&W about 7 years ago and did not care for it much, but cannot even remember the model.

So, what suggestions do you guys have in the $1,500 or lower range?

Why is it that the FNH can have a mag capacity of 15 for .45 and almost everything else is a 10 round capacity? Is the grip on the FNH just huge?

Glocks and xds are higher cap 45s too. As for the FN I couldn't tell ya I've always wanted to try one but have never seen one in person.

Ok , you eliminated 1911 , and presumably SA aoutos. Now to decide if you have feelings between DA/SA and DAO - Glock-ish .

Your price point covers almost everything , with most a good bit less.

    At the least testdrive M&P , Glock , XD , and P250 .

For the more Old School feel the CZ and the Clones.

Basically fondle and hopefully testdrive everything until somthing fits your hand particularily well , balances well , and has a trigger that doesn't suck.

FWIW , my newest to me .45acp is Ruger P90 - aprox size and wt of Combat Commander, accurate , and built like a tank. The grip fit well in store. Upon taking for a spin a little bit of twisting. A grip sleve made it perfect. YMMV

Don't overlook the Glock 21. It can be had for half of your budget. 13 round mags... extremely accurate. The G21SF will even fit most people's hands!

Add in a huge variety of holster options... it's very popular with LEO deparments.

    $1500 could get you a 1911 and a glock 30 sf. Everyone knows 1 is none and 2 is 1 so buy 2 45's...

Is the USP45 a better choice over the HK Mark 23 or the HK45?

I like the USP Compact 9mm and the USP .40 S&W. Assuming the USP45 is the same frame as the USP .40 S&W. Just have not seen either of the other two HK 45s in person.
Not sure either since I haven't shot the other two HK's but I like the USP better than my G21 or XD. :D

I think that the HK45 is probably a small step up from the USP, and you're not likely to find a Mark 23 inside of $1500, so if you do go with an HK, with the budget you have proposed, the USP or HK45 is probably the way to go if you want an H&K.

I just got a used/consignment USP 45, and discovered just last night that it wasn't nearly as new as I thought it was - the 2 character year designation (that I just learned about yesterday) puts it 1995 production. Coulda fooled me - that thing is a tack driver if I do my part, and it looks practically new.

For your budget, I'd probably go with an H&K.

Yep, I saw that picture of yours in either a thread you started about HK or the HK porn pic thread. I really like HK. My one issue with it versus the FNH is that the FNH has 15 in the mag.

The magazine isn't a deal breaker for me - it's a 12 round mag if you get the non-blocked mags, although they are a bit costly. I figure I just don't need more than that. heck, I don't need more than the 7 rounds in my 1911, at least not as a defensive pistol.

I think you'd be quite happy either way you go. My next pistol will likely be a Walther PPQ, so I'm not totally an H&K fanboy.
