Howdy from the peninsula. I am new to recreational shooting. I would like advice about home protection as well as recreational target shooting. Any recommendations? I would prefer a semi-auto pistol.

    Thanks,

    Welcome,

plenty of local SOMD folk on here.

As for your home protection planning:
    what are you thinking PISTOL/SHOTGUN/RIFLE?
Pistols are okay, but you use them to fight to the rifle :D
Shotguns are great (but if you have animals, children, might want to go with precision)
Rifles are good, but have over penetration issues (bullets going through your walls)

    Welcome Allen to the forum!:)

Yeah, what Inigoes said. Shotgun is a good bet for home def. 00-Buck would do the job.

Meet us at Myrtle Grove and try some of our different firearms. You'll have an EBR before you know it.;)

There are a few of us here from Mech.
Come to the Frostbite Shoot also. It's VERY worth it.:party29:

Welcome. What inigoes said. Pistol IMHO is best place to start at home. If I recommend a caliber, it will only start a which bullet is best for home defense discussion. Bullets kill if shot accurately. I like .45 but 9mm and up is gtg.
Most big name pistols are reliable and just fine. Again, I like XD's, SIG, Walther, S&W, but there are a bunch that are GTG. Find what feels good for you and fits your budget.
Enjoy and welcome to the PROM.

    Welcome.

Hard to do around here, but if you have a chance go to a range that rents and shoot some handguns see what you like.

Sanners Lake (google it) has IDPA matches open to the public. And is also a place that you could possibly join.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I realy have my eye on a SIG P229 DAK. Pricey I know, but it comes highly recommended by some LEO friends of mine.

I would love to meet some folks at Myrtle Grove, just tell me when.

If the item is pricey, see if you can hit the range with someone who already has one. Nothing like buyer remorse.

Pistols are an extremely personal choice, how does it fit in your hand, how well do you mange the recoil to put the sights back on target. Things like that to think about.

Tentaively, A couple of us are looking at Myrtle Grove on Feb 13th.
