Yo! New to this site, although I've already met some of you due to an earlier post.

Who am I?: In no particular order, somewhat of a news junkie (right-leaning or just plain right), enjoy weight-lifting, thrillers, zombie and other EOTWAWKI novels, married, three sons, all mostly grown, always interested in new things, but never enough time to explore. Voted Trump 2x but now a DeSantis guy. That's a topic for another forum, I guess. Never met a conspiracy theory I didn't like. Attracted to the wisdom of prepping, but still feeling my way.

Why interest in MD Shooters?: Hope to benefit from accumulated wisdom on guns, gun training, places to practice, and maybe shoot the sh** some (am I allowed to spell out sh**?).

Specific/Current gun interests: (1) Need good place to practice. Went to MGN once - it was ok. Not experienced with ranges but don't object to them. (2) Looking for a trainer for my boys (and me!) to get foundational experience with pistols. Not in a hurry on this. I know ranges have people, but for 3 boys and several sessions each can get pricey (3) Interested in purchasing a long gun eventually. Want to collect opinions on what to get. AR gun in MD doesn't seem worth the effort due to restrictions, but could be wrong. Leaning towards hunting rifle but one with magazine +3 capability, if such a thing exists. Shot .22 with my Grandpa when I was a boy and still remember.

I could ramble on, but won't. Thanks to those who responded to my earlier post - you know who you are! Baptism by fire with some of you. :)

    Welcome !

" Mostly Grown sons " ? Would youth marksmanship programs be relavent ? Or are they over 18 ?

Are you looking for formal Handgun classes , or are you open to more informal mentoring ?

Do you have W&C Permit yet ? If not , first step is to cross off that infringement , for you , and any family members over 21 , or will be over 21 within two years .

For Maryland AR-15 , your overwhelming choice will be some flavor of 16 inch HBAR . These aren't bad things . Plenty of discussion here about " best" . My standard observation is that the Windham HBC is the Yardstick of both quality and price .

Hunting Rifle with 3 rd mag capacity ? What is your concept of Hunting Rifle ? Wild guess from the context , do you mean Bolt Action ?

    Welcome from Harford County!
If you're somewhat interested in prepping a rifle in .223/ 5.56 is almost a necessity, right after the .22 A Ruger mini-14 does pretty much the same thing as an AR but doesn't "look so scary", it's just not as customizable and costs more nowadays than a good AR.

    Hey Sasquatch,

My youngest is 18, my oldest is 24 (still at home - you know how it goes these days. Getting started in life is expensive), and my middle kid is, um, 21 (always have to calculate his age). Ideally I'd like more informal training - even if paid. Some arrangement to our mutual benefit, where we could build on skills. Would need a place to shoot, so that may be a complication.

Hunting rifle - yes, bolt action. Why? Dunno, really. Just have the impression that they are more accurate. I wouldn't mind a little target shooting. But I admit I haven't considered ARs. Largely due to living in MD. (Gotta get out of here as soon as I can). My impression is that the legal lockdown on ARs in MD lock out many of the better rifles. Am I wrong on this?

Thanks for the advice on the AR. I will look into that.

Thanks! I will look into this. Being a prepper in training, a major consideration for me is ammo availability. I'm not familiar with .223 or 5.56 ammo availability. Is that ammo considered "widely" available?

Thanks again. All thoughts are welcome. I am so new to this it's pitiful. But never too late!

Hey outrider. You ever need book suggestions, I'm your man. But I don't do romances.

Although the other day I was reading a preview on Amazon of a book called "Mama and the Alien Warrior". :) Pretty much what you'd expect, assuming you've ever thought about earth women and strapping lizard aliens with a highly functional tail - and who hasn't. :)

    I didn't buy that book.

Prices have come down and availability gone up from the highs seen during the Rona Riots and lockdown buying spree. Here is a sample: https://gun-deals.com/list/ammo/.223%2F5.56

.223/ 5.56 has come down enough to not be outrageous to buy & shoot in real time , but marginal to stack deep yet .

    AR availability ?

Most of what you see in magazines / cable tv , you can't get , due to bbl profile .

But you Can get AR's of every quality and price point here , including multiple custom builders .

I'm gonna have to pester you for explanations sometimes. Like, what is BBL? I looked online, and it can mean:

    Broadband Lite
    Brisbane Broncos Ltd
    Bangkok Bank PTL
    Brazilian Butt Lift

Somehow, I'm guessing none of those apply. :)
