Seems like the issue stems from having an unlimited/air cannon division.

Couldn't/shouldn't they continue with the catapult and trebuchet division?

I always that that is where most of the clever design and engineering comes into play.

That's actually a really good idea. Recreate the battle between the Monitor and the Virginia....with pumpkins.
