I know in our Fed office (EEOC) anyone who does not have a Federal ID much show proper ID, go through a metal detector, and then be escorted around the building. Been that way since at least post 9/11.

The metal detector and escort is within the realm of reason...

Although, what law is being enforced by having to show ID?

From what I have seen I have not been able to find a law, it seems to be more of a policy that was passed down from agency director in response to 9/11

    More specifically, which law?

TSA does not even mandate ID

We understand passengers occasionally arrive at the airport without an ID, due to lost items or inadvertently leaving them at home. Not having an ID, does not necessarily mean a passenger won’t be allowed to fly. If passengers are willing to provide additional information, we have other means of substantiating someone’s identity, like using publicly available databases.

I dont know if it's law or not, but there are rather heavily armed, very serious individuals that ask me for ID for every fed building I go into. I normally comply with here you go sir/ma'am.
In other words, no ID, no entry.

Which would be violating your rights!

The authorities can always ask, you don't have to provide ID, just state your name.
