S&W 15-22 firing when safety is on

Hoping someone can point me to what to look for. Its new, less than 500 rounds through it. I know the safety did work, but this time I shot 100 rounds before I realized the safety was on. I flicked it to fire and back a few times and no real difference. I did clean it, so it is possible that I "did" something.

Any ideas of what to look for?

I would call S&W, get a repair number and send her back. I'm almost positive they are not going to give you any problems about fixing the safety.

Did you pull out the entire fire control group or anything or just wipe it off? If you only wiped it off, then there's no way you caused it to do such a thing. I'd call S&W ASAP. They won't give you grief over a possible lawsuit you're having them fix ahead of time.

Pretty much just wiped it down.

Did you by chance remove the grip at some point? When you move the selector, do you feel it "snap" into the position? If I remember correctly, both the rear takedown and safety selector spring/detent are accessed by removing the grip. My guess would be the selector detent.

Nope, never removed the grip. I did take the bolt out and lean that. But that was pretty straightforward from what I remember.
