Before Covid, if one wanted to listen live to Supreme Court oral argument you had to camp out overnight near the Court steps, just for the chance of winning a coveted seat in the Courtroom to hear the case argument in person the next morning.
If you weren’t in the Courtroom you had to wait until that evening to read the argument transcript, and several more days to listen to the audio recording.
For the first time in our experience, we listened to oral argument outdoors, in real time, as it happened, broadcast by a portable speaker.
We could clearly hear the distinctive voices of the Justices asking their questions, even while we were across the street.
