I thought that case only had to do with non-violent midemeanants not being able to acquire a license to purchase. the article makes it seem otherwise. guess I'm gonna have to dig out the actual writ of certiorari and read it

    QUESTION PRESENTED
Massachusetts requires people to obtain licenses in
order to possess or purchase handguns, and it
disqualifies people with certain criminal convictions
    from obtaining licenses. Pertinently, Massachusetts
law provides that an individual who has been convicted
of a nonviolent misdemeanor that concerned the
possession or use of a gun can obtain a license that
allows him to possess a handgun at home after five
years have passed. However, this same person can
never obtain authorization to purchase a handgun—
meaning that the only way they can obtain one is if
someone leaves it to them by bequest or intestacy. The
question presented is whether a state can impose a
lifetime ban on purchasing handguns (but not
possessing them) against anyone who has been
convicted of a nonviolent misdemeanor that involved
the possession or use of guns
It certainly appears that the question of the case is only about disqualifying individuals convicted of non-violent misdemeanors from every getting a license to own a handgun. My guess is the case will be narrowly decided for only that question.

that said, I believe licenses to own a firearm is just as unconstitutional as training requirements and licenses to carry.

Even though swinokur's avatar creeps me out a little, I love seeing it next to thread titles like this:

Depending on how the lower court rules it could keep the HQL alive since the HQL is only needed for purchase.

The court will address eligibility, not the permit itself.

If you read the Cert application you will see that is what the court is being asked to address
