It's NICS. Yes, depending on the clearance level, it can be delayed due to an active background investigation for a security clearance. It's best to avoid/delay regulated purchases until the clearance is issued, especially since a regulated purchase can affect/delay your clearance. Not a good move if your job depends on having the clearance.

It may depend on the agency that is providing a security clearance? A NICS check is like digging a small hole in your yard, a securtiy clearance background check is like drilling multiple deep holes in your back yard.

I've heard that rumor too, but I've never had a delay with NCIS as a result of my clearances. No one else that I personally know has had problems either, and I know quite a few gun owners with the highest possible clearances. Yet I keep hearing that same rumor.

It can happen, those guys are blowing smoke up you azz in here!!! Depends on the clearance level.

Absolutely. If NSA does the investigation for a high-level, high-sensitivity clearance, then the first investigator that comes to your house is likely to request that you avoid high-dollar or firearm purchases during the investigation because it might cause delays. That is pure fact.

For trivial clearances like "secret", which are less involved than getting a driver's license, delays are highly unlikely.

Your line of work and clearance level are what matters.

Never an issue for me and my clearance is not on the lower end of the spectrum.

I've heard this rumor for years, but never experienced it in the 12yrs I've had a clearance.

I have heard that it can come up during an investigation (they'll look at your nics checks), but it didn't come up in my SSBI. If you're a contractor and visit installations, tthey'll often do a Nics check also, so I figure that horse is already out of the barn....

Sometime after the FBI checks started, I contacted the FBI because I was always being put on hold. I was told that the computer looks for hits on you in several systems. The more hits it gets, the longer it takes. In the early days, searches over 30 seconds were put on hold.

Since that time, the computer servers have been upgraded and it is rare that this happens. However, if you have an active BI or other clearance investigation, I would think that you could come back with a delay.

    Just my .02,

I was told by a FFL that a person having a clearance could be delayed on a NCIS check because of their clearance. I was told it is because the government wants to know why someone is checking in on their cleared person. I was told that it happens more often when gun shows are going on in the local area.

    Can others confirm this?

Total BS.... post the idiots name here so we can slap him around a bit. :lol2:

I've never been delayed - when I got my USP back in March (submitted paperwork on Feb 5th) my app came back in the same timeframe as everyone else who submitted around the 5th of February.

You would never know if you got delayed on a regulated purchase even if they did it in 7 days, MSP did the check, it could have happened at day 65, you would never know. The delay would be a day or 2, it has happened to me on purchases in another state that only required a NCIS check. Unless you buy a unregulated gun, you would never see the delay if it happened.

I would get delayed day one, day 2 they call me to pick it up. Happened 2 times the second time I got the call 3 hours later I was approved. It can happen. When I called they said a supervisor has to approve it when you have a clearance, this was a few years back when it was only done by phone, so it was luck of the draw if you got a supervisor, or if one was in the area.

The system has changed and gone automated so it could have changed, but that's my experience.

I have had a DoD clearance (I won't say how high) for over a decade, and I've never been delayed or anything.

    YMMV.

PS: Gor-ram I feel old right now....
