And be VERY careful with the starting fluid. It is known to put holes in pistons if used excessively. Don't try and run the engine by continuing to spray it in the carb. Also sounds like it might be a fuel delivery issue if when you pump the primer bulb it continues to run. Sounds like it might be loosing suction.

This is why I state to use Lighter Fluid, NOT starting fluid!!!

I've been building/repairing small engines since I was 13.

I've seen what "Starting Fluid" can do. (I've seen pistons get holes punched into 'em and sparkplugs get 'blown' out of their threads!)


A couple of questions to the OP:

• What make engine is this???
• How old is this engine?????

IF this engine wasn't maintained properly (or is very old), the piston rings COULD be worn out, and you're getting an awful lot of oil coming into the combustion chamber, and it's TRYING to burn with the gas/air mix.

FWIW.... I am currently running an old Briggs & Stratton engine on an old commercial mower deck. It starts on the 1st or 2nd pull, every time!
The mower deck (Bobcat) is from 1976/'77. The engine is a 3.5 hp engine, from a mower that I bought in 1983.
The ONLY thing that's been done to that B&S engine (other than oil/sparkplug/blade changes - I had to put a new rope in the recoil starter!!)
That new rope was put in this Spring!!
