Someone told me a 1/4 in clevis pin works as well. Picked one up at Ace a couple of weeks ago but haven't tried it yet.

I hold the rear one in with a razor blade while screwing in the buffer tube

Anyone who has built an AR(it only takes once), from then on, has a healthy stash of detents and springs. They are cheap and plentiful.
If, sometime in the future, you stumble upon a 'lost' detent, you must start your next build with it.
I don't even put it in until it's almost screwed in all the way. The rear can be damaged easier than lost.
My wife found a spring in our kitchen light fixture. I was looking everywhere for that damn thing.
