When I took 4 X 6 gallon Nalagene "Jerry Cans" from the plant that was closing down & we were told to "take everything rather than pay for disposal."
I ordered them from new years before & know 100% for sure they have only ever held pure distilled water.

Well yesterday, with zero warning out 20 year old hot water heater sprung a terminal leak. Because of that on the plumber's advice we shut down the incoming water, to prevent the possibility of a blow out.
Guess what we're using for water until the new unit is found installed tested & working?
yup 24 gallons of "stored for emergencies" treated potable water.

The water heater should have it's own shutoff so you don't have to turn the entire system off

    Should. I know.
    Doesn't though.
That is being remedied as the new one goes in.
"Clorox" at low levels. measured. 6 drops per gallon for well water. I don't actually use "drops", as I have, from a previous existence, an adjustable digital pipette so I use that.
I've been doing it for a long time, this lot is only about 18 months. We emptied & refilled when we moved.
I have kept it for 4 years with this methodology & it was still fine at the end.

Not that many, but I'm ready for routine emergencies.
"If its yellow let it mellow, but if its brahn, send it on dahn" level stuff hat actually happens!
    We're not hurting.

We've lost cable/internet. Someone or maybe a big storm ripped the cable out.

Sounds like you need a 3/4" sharkbite cap.

I'm guessing the supply line to your old water heater is 3/4". Get the appropriate size sharkbite cap, cut the supply with a tubing cutter, deburr with a knife, give it a twist with a piece of sandpaper, and push the sharkbite on straight.

Turn your water back on and check for leaks.
