Happy Land Social Club in NYC . 1990

Patron was disgruntled at being ejected by bouncers , so he bought $1.00 of gas , threw it inside the entrence, and lit it .

Waco involved a whole buncha people, but did involve fire at critical juncture.

Largest mass murder in US involving two people involved fertilizer, not firearms .

Nearly 1.3 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day. An additional 20-50 million are injured or disabled. More than half of all road traffic deaths occur among young adults ages 15-44.

Whats worse, Illegals kill on average 20 people a day in car crashes including DUI. Why isn't the left demanding mass deportation? Instead they are all for sanctuary cities.

Allergic reactions to bee stings. Time to ban bee stingers. Deadly assault weapons that no bee should be allowed to have.

Meanwhile , for at least some of the anti's .

It is more about their perceptions and personal experiences , than statistics with no other connection.

They see millions of people using cars & other motor vehicles for transportation for most aspects of life . Some environmentalists argue the details of the vehicles , and want to marginally reduce usage. But no question widely used for worthwhile purposes.

Likewise everyone has had at least routine medical care. Pretty much everyone had had either Major care themselves, or knows people who have . Most of them survive , and most of them improved . So they also have context of good vs bad outcomes of medical profession.

Most people don't have pools in their backyards, but most people have been to swimming pools, lakes, or beaches . Even if they didn't swim themselves , they are well aware of millions of people having recreation and sporting events in the water, so they have context of good vs bad outcomes of water based recreation.

And through the spectrum of causes of accidental deaths , it is similar. Some may try to reduce accidents , but the basic premise is accepted , in the larger context.

And then there are firearms . We know that the benign and positive use of firearms massively outnumbers accidents and criminal misuse . Orders of magnitude lower than the other discussed causes of death. Accidents are at all time low, and still dropping.

But large segments of the population have no exposure to positive firearms use . Either themselves , or anyone they know ( that they are aware of ). In some regions the larger population is at least aware of hunting seasons , but hunting has enough issues itself , to not be the unadulterated supplier of acceptance of good will to firearms it was a cpl generations ago .

Instead , all they see is overhyped news coverage of criminal caused deaths, with no other contexts.

In the Long Run we need to expand the percentage of the population that has exposure to positive uses of firearms . Not even necessarily convince them to join our hobby , but understand that :

This can be quite enjoyable for the participants
They do this in a very safety conscious manner.
The people who do this are good people , who frequently do good things in other contexts of the community .

This is a long term thing. It probably won't give instant gratification of defeating this Bill , or improving that law today. But in the long run , we need to reach segments of the uninform , who are default weakly following the Media barrage.

Added - Damn this looks long after I hit "post" .

Exposure....the key word. When I was young in Pennsylvania we use to walk down the street carrying our shotguns. We weren’t going to rob anyone but just walking to the cornfields to go pheasant hunting. Common scene and nobody got all worked up. Nowadays all the snowflakes moved to the suburbs and aren’t use to seeing this and scream “shooter”. They had no exposure and no idea. Welcome to my way of life.

Same thing . Virtually everone uses or used texting, and they know it is of great utility in communicating in everyday life.

They might wish the 400 number were lower , but have a larger context of millions ( billions ?) of benign and positive communications by text, and place 400 in context.

We also lose an average of 10+ teens a day to texting while driving...over 400 per year. That statistic floored me when I heard it. Outcry anywhere???

That's more than Parkland, every other day!

How about the 5-10 million Armalite style rifles owned by upstanding citizens? Complied from FBI UCR going back to the turn of the century, there have only been 5 years with >400 homicides involving rifles, with 4 years <300. Average for the time period is 368.

If you do the math, that's less than 0.01% of all those "evil" rifles. Free the 99.99%!

Is anything more deadly than motor vehicle accidents? A high percentage are caused by criminal negligence, yet the sheep aren't calling for a ban on the purchase/possession of motor vehicles.

1,000,000 times this. That's why shooting was pulled from many schools. People fear what they don't understand, so controlling politicians make it so. The largest indoor ranges in this country were in schools. Some of the excuses for closure were the EPA warnings about lead, but pellet and BB guns could be used to teach the same familiarity, saftey lessons and marksmanship knowledge. I think that is one of the main reasons (politicians) ban BB guns and range facilities in many large cities.
