    Hi fellas,

I just recently purchased the aforementioned
Uberti 1858 Remington Black Powder Revolver 44 Caliber

I would appreciate any general information that you may have on your experiences with this piece.

also, I am planning on loading this revolver in black powder and purchasing the conversion cylinder, as I do my own reloading for other pieces. If you have any foundational or beginning recipes for black powder or the 45LC long Colt conversion, I would be greatly appreciative.
Since I am just getting started with this gun, id like your preferences on powder kind and amount, preferred projectiles, and any tips and/or tricks.

Thanks in advance for any help your willing to offer.

I will be posting this thread on the reloading forum as well.
SO... If you could simply make it clear to me that your talking about loads for reloading the 45LongColt, or the 44 Black powder, I'd really appreciate that just so I don't get confused since this piece accepts both.

You can use as much FFF black powder as you want. Fill the case up to within 1/4" inch or so from the top. Then compress the powder with the bullet. You NEVER want air in between the black powder and the bullet. Your BOOM will become a BOMB.

You will want to use a soft lead bullet too. Hornady makes a great 255 grain cowboy bullet (Product Number 12458). You can buy them in bulk. And they come pre-coated in a powdery wax/lubricant.

I say a lot of dumb and sarcastic things. The first line isn't one of them.

FFFG , firmly seated, no air space.

Some sort of lube required. Commercial prelubed wads are easiest. Loose grease on top of ball also option. Choices of commercial BP lubes, repurposed lubes, and homemade concoctions are near infinite variety, and every one of them has enthuiastic supporters and haters. Pick a cpl choices at random, and see what gives better accuracy, or you prefer to deal with.

Likewise, see what is more accurate for you, round ball or conical.

With the conversion cylinder, don't exceede SAAMI pressures, and SASS type loads even better.

Maybe someone can recommend a good cleaner as well.
The fellow who sold me my Uberti said to use soapy water.
Well, that resulted in rust and a new cylinder.

Hot soapy water is the standard for cleaning BP firearms and clorate primed cartrige arms. You need to dry and lubricate the guns afterwards or you will get rust. I blow my guns off with shop air and then spray with WD40 and then wipe them down. I lubricate any rotating parts with real mink oil and never have any corrosion.

OP, don't use your standard powder measure for measuring the powder. If you cut a grain of BP, it could ignite which would not be a good thing.

If you are just shooting paper, I would use 25 grains of Pyro P and fill with corn meal to 1/8 '' of the mouth of the case. Add a lubed wad and then seat your bullet. This is what I use for shooting paper at 20 yards and it is very accurate in my converted 1858 Uberti. I use 200 grain RNFP bulllets that I load for my other .45 caliber guns and they work just fine.

The corn meal fills the case without the extra recoil from a case full of powder. It also helps clean the bore as it cleans the remaining bore residue from the previous shot.

Hot soapy water IS the time honored and still effective cleaning method. They just didn't follow through with the complete drying, and lightly oiling part.
