The guys at the water cooler said this was the place to ask about values of some old rifles. I am trying to sale some dust collectors from the back of the safe to get something I will shoot. I have looked on gun web sites, but I only seem to be able to find what they are selling for, not what then have actually sold for.

I don't want to try and sell them for a silly price, but I don't want to get raped either. Are there sites that specialize in old rifles, or are generic sites like gunbroker the best place to list?

There is a Colt for sale on gunbroker http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=396399122
No idea if that is a realistic price or not. I "follow" auctions of guns that I am interested in on gunbroker and see what they actually sell for. Some guys will relist their over priced guns for months (years?) on end.

To be candid, none of you guns are in smoking hot condition, and I'm not sure .22's are where the collectors are. For all I know one of those could be quite rare, but I think a less rare Winchester lever action would be worth a whole lot more. The next most interesting of your guns is the Model 97, but here are a zillion of those in better condition than yours.

The auctions I've been to do not bring top dollar, in part because the auction house is charging the buyers another 15-20% on top the price.

I'd spend my time researching the best price for the colt and let the others go to make space.

    Assuming everything works...

The two Mossberg 22's and Winchester 03 are worth about $275 each.

The Winchester riot shotgun is worth probably $500. Double that if military.

The Colt Lightning Pump (.38-40?) should be professionally appraised. ;) It's from about 1902-1903.

Maybe I'm a little more conservative, but I would say the Mossberg 22s are $200.... maybe $225 each. The Winchester 97, looks like a plain Jane model (I don't think its riot or military)... maybe its a take down, but I'd say $300 to $350 (which baffles me since they were going for not much less then this 15 years ago, but they just never seemed to go up much). Just my 2 cents based on what I've seen the last few years and opinion on condition.

As far as selling them, I'd suggest selling them on the classifieds here. Save the Auction fees and sell local.

Id be interested in the Model 97. I'm a shotgun fan.

Let me know please when you decide a price. I'd like to have a chance at it.

A member just sold the coveted take down for $500 IIRC.

The 16 Oct is my anniversary. The wife would approve.

    Where they send me.
I tried to sell a mossberg like the 1st one you have listed. Mine has the rear peep sight and I think is in a little better shape. I was asking $250 for it at the Howard show and couldn't find any buyers for it.

Really depends on the market you're in. Gunbroker may be your best bet if you want to go through that amount of hassle.

Sorry, can't help you with the values on the others.

Consignment at a shop that doesn't take too large a % is also a good option.

Id would love to have a chance at that Spanish Mauser. I'm not sure what the exact value number would be but if you are planning on selling it pm me. To me it looks like the stock is cut down and maybe an old refinish at some point. I say $100-200 range depending on bore and numbers. You can get these with a newer .308 barrel from around $170ish.

OP, thanks for sharing, those are some cool guns that I have never seen before. If anything, post them up for sale in the classifieds, and see what they bring.

    Correct answer!

Beyond that I wish my safe clean out yielded such nice pieces. That Colt Lightning is awesome.

The lightning needs detailed research as to all the particulars ( year , variant , options , etc ) , if not apraisal by a specialist.

The '97 is a shooter grade takedown.20-ish yrs ago had a rapid skyrocket in value when they were THE hot setup for SASS matches. In the years since several CAS specific shotguns have apeared , and the Win97 is just one option of many , and the prices have been relatively steady. Heck , they still have a following as hunting guns to this day.

This search feature is also very useful to see how active and successful a particular seller is (does each of his auctions run multiple times before sale, does a particular gun keep coming back after being sold, how much does he sell, etc). It also has the same search features which lets you really winnow down to what you're interested in and track a particular gun as well - has that gun been continuously listed for months? if so, there's probably a reason. Has it recently been discounted? if so this might be the cycle to jump on it, many people (myself included) recognize a particular gun that's been languishing for months (or years) and ignore it - but this might be the time it's finally become reasonably priced.

As with the current search, it's only as good as the seller's listing. Stuff slips through the cracks all the time :)

It typically only reaches back 2-3 months though. I haven't figured out how to fully utilize Auction Arms search (gunauction.com) but Google will pick out AA stuff from years ago that still has pics even. GB discards the listings beyond 3 months... difficult to predict trending unless you keep track of it yourself.

Blue Book - some of that data hasn't been updated in literally years (some of the older Colts - 2008 was the last update). Some is updated recently. The online service is the most recent and shows history of pricing for trending. Worth the $$, cheaper than the book in the long run.
