1. VCDL virtual membership meeting TONIGHT, Dec. 16
Join us LIVE for the December monthly meeting on our VCDL "Live" page or the VCDL YouTube channel at 8pm TONIGHT, 12/16/21.
We'll talk about our lawsuits, Lobby Day, the upcoming legislative session and will have Senator Amanda Chase as our special guest!
See you tonight.
2. Fredericksburg trying to “slip through” local gun-control
VCDL’s Watch Team for Local Government (WTLG) leader, Theron Keller, caught Fredericksburg City Council slipping in a new agenda item on the day of the meeting. That agenda item was to have the City Attorney gather information on local gun-control. Such information could be presented to City Council by either January 11th or the 25th.
We will advise once we know when this issue is coming up before City Council. We will want a strong turnout at City Council that night and we will also do an email/phone campaign.

3. Fairfax County pushing the public to use Virginia’s red-flag law
Ever the tyrants, Fairfax County is pushing to get people to use red flag laws to disarm others. Red flag laws do not help a person in crisis, they merely take that person’s guns, as if that will make a difference to a suicidal person or one who is a danger to others. The red flag law is on VCDL’s list of laws to repeal.

4. Fairfax County gun owner stops, holds home invader, fires a warning shot (ugh)
A bad guy entered a home in NoVA through an unsecured door. Armed with a knife, the invader refused to leave and lunged at the residents.
All’s well that ends well, but here are some things to consider:
One of the residents was armed and fired a warning shot into the floor. The time wasted firing a warning shot into the floor could have allowed the bad guy to bury his knife in the gun owner’s chest before the gun could be redeployed. The gun owner now has a hole in the floor and hopefully there wasn’t an occupied room underneath that floor.
Luckily for the gun owner, the bad guy stopped his attack and became compliant. That was very, very lucky. There is a good chance the bad guy might have intensified his attack, especially if he was on drugs. Usually when a criminal realizes their victim is armed, they flee. But if they don’t flee (thanks, perhaps, to Mr. Crack Cocaine), it’s quite possible that a warning shot isn’t going to scare them away, either.
The other dangerous thing is holding a criminal at gun point. If you must do this, be sure to keep your distance so your gun cannot be grabbed. Also be prepared for what you are going to do if the criminal doesn’t follow your orders. A less-lethal tool might be useful in that case, such as pepper spray, a taser, or a pepper ball gun to get compliance.
Some final notes: if the criminal turns around empty handed and walks away, you CANNOT use deadly force to stop them, as they are no longer a threat. Also, never shoot to wound. If you have time to aim to make a wounding shot, the threat isn’t really all that imminent. Plus, even a shot to the leg, if it lands in the right place, could be fatal.

5. Redistricting could affect you, more info
From VCDL EM Theron Keller:
As you are probably aware, Virginia is in the middle of redistricting after the 2020 census. Despite the new Constitutional Amendment setting up an evenly divided, supposedly non-partisan redistricting committee, they could not agree on new districts, so the task went to the Virginia Supreme Court, who appointed their own people to come up with new maps.
They have published their proposed District maps for US Congress, Virginia House and Virginia Senate.
They are taking comments at this time - on a fairly short time line.
It's not necessarily easy to spot problems, but since these districts will have a direct impact on our legislative success for the next 10 years, it may not be a bad idea for the VCDL community to be aware of the process. You might want to take the time to review the proposed maps and provide feedback.
This page has a list of the maps, the interactive ones allow you to add comments directly for each of the three kinds of Districts.
