VCDL Virginia Beach Action Item! 3/11/22
On Tuesday, March 15, at 6 pm, the Virginia Beach City Council is going to take up a resolution requested by an anti-self-defense City Council member, Sabrina Wooten. The resolution will likely not come up until after 7 pm.
The resolution is to "Create a Memorial for Victims of Gun Violence" and is item K.6. on the agenda.
The problem is, of course, that this resolution insults everyone's intelligence by effectively blaming guns, which are inanimate objects, for violent crime, instead of blaming the vicious criminals who intentionally and maliciously harm others. The gun, a mere tool, becomes the scapegoat, while the actual cause of the violence, the criminal, is ignored.
ALL violence inflicted on an innocent person is wrong. All of it, including violence inflicted using hands and feet; knives and other cutting instruments; blunt objects like baseball bats, tire irons, crowbars, bricks, and rocks; motor vehicles; and so on.
If the resolution was to "Create a Memorial for the Innocent Victims of Violence," VCDL would be all for it.
We must fight to protect our rights in the General Assembly, in the courts, and in the Court of Public Opinion.
ACTION ITEM #1
If you live in Virginia Beach, send an email to City Council in opposition to Item K.6. on Tuesday's agenda:
Email address to reach all of City Council: citycouncil@vbgov.com
Suggested subject: Oppose item K.6. as proposed
Suggested message:
As a resident of Virginia Beach, I urge you to oppose item K.6. on Tuesday's agenda unless it is changed to be a memorial for all innocent victims of violence, regardless of how the violence was inflicted! Choosing one method, the misuse of firearms, implies that those killed by knives, hands and feet, blunt object trauma, etc. are not worthy of being remembered.
Sincerely,
-
ACTION ITEM #2
If you can, attend the meeting in person. Details:
Location:
Municipal Center Building 1
