I have a budget of about a grand and looking to buy a .30 caliber class rifle. Mostly considering semi autos, but figured I would use a poll to gauge what kind of luck people have had with some of the options I'm considering.

    1. Vepr in .308 or 7.62x54r: Like the RPK build but not sure of mags

    2. AR-10: can I get a good one for under a grand?

    3. PSA KS-47: AK mags but what about quality (and I'm not too sure of buying another x39 rifle)

    4. Colt 6721 or similar AR: not really looking at 5:56 but would take one. Only considering Colt and equal/better quality

    5. PTR-32: not really looking at x39 but I love my CETME and this has to be better. No chrome lining though.

    6. Ruger Gunsite Scout 7.62: a bolt gun but one I've listed after for awhile

    7. Ljungman or Hakim

    8. Other (explain)

    Which would you choose?

Ruger American .308 on sale this week at Walmart would have left you with about $775 to buy something else.

    Yup....$199

Before he died, Lou45 was selling Colt 6721s for $860 cash.

$1150 would have got you two rifles.

VEPR in .308. Cuzz the rims on the x54r worry me.

And a Yugoslavian M48 or M48A in 8mm. Cuzz you can't have enough Mausers.

I have a nice M48 that shoots about 1.5" groups at 125 yards. I wouldn't part with it for anything!

I have concerns over rimlock in the mags and mag availability. I heard Galil mags work for the .308 Vepr but nothing definite.

Hands down the greatest value in surplus bolt action rifles.

Mauser feeding and reliability are legendary.

I voted AR-10 even though $1k probably wouldn't get you close. I picked it based on my experience of my SR-25. That's one I'll never let go of.

If I had to pick one, it would be the AR-10. Parts for the AR style rifles are more readily available. The accuracy is good enough for target and hunting. This maybe you last chance to buy one. You could always buy a bolt gun later.

    $199?! Wow...

I like the Gunsite because it has iron sights and it's basically a detachable magazine M77. Not to poo-poo the Ruger American, but I find it's the top of the "budget hunter" class of rifle like the Savage Axis and Remington 770. Not bad but not built for extended shooting.

I originally considered the PTR-32 and Vepr because of your exact argument: Last Chance? I just wonder how good a basic DPMS AR-10 is for a grand?

Don't think you can touch a decent AR10 for a grand. More like 2k, but I picked it anyway.

Yerp, my thoughts on both accounts. Just looking at parts price for building one it looks like an easy $1500, and a basic one at that.

I'm looking at maybe $1200 tops. I have seen basic DPMS guns are around $1k but I'm not sure they are all that great. I was looking to see a consensus of whether an AR-10 at that price competes with guns like a decent quality AR-15 or other x39 or x51 choices of decent quality.
