Mercer county is a pretty rural place. The Sheriffs dept has something like 9 deputies, if you call at night, the deputy may get paged out from his home at the other end of the county. The homeowner could have gutted the guy in his yard and he wouldn't get charged.

Unfortunately, the place is close enough to the oil-patch that all kinds of undesireables start to filter in.

    Oh well.

Imagine if this happened in MD - shooting the guy in the back as he fled. The homeowner would have been arrested for attempted murder, plus assorted civil rights violations for violating the attacker's right to shoot and rob him.

Best line in the whole story, "I’m too damned old to be shooting at people." Who is he, Roger Murtaugh?

"Gegelman said he plans to get himself a bigger gun and more bullets."

Why, why, WHY? No one EVER needs more than 10 bullets! A gun-fearing politician told me so!

    really. to their cell phones????

If the phone comes up as unreachable, it forwards to 'state radio' which is the state patrol dispatch.

Most of the smaller counties have joined forces and operate joint dispatch centers and jails. There may be one jail for 5 counties. Has its own problems. If you only have 1-2 deputies to cover a county at night and they have to make an arrest, one of them is out of commission for 2-3 hrs round-trip to deliver the prisoner to the regional jail.
