Not sure if anyone has been following SB784. Credit to Senator West for taking control of the debate and demanding stats that do not exist showing that law abiding legal firearm owners are the lead cause of gunshot emergencies in Shock Trauma. That's right. There was no such data available. Amendments were offered to make the civil penalties of those convicted of illegal use of a firearm, etc to be the core financial resource to help Shock Trauma - Not accepted. This bill brings a huge increase for the purchase of any firearm as well as ammo and other firearm related materials. Senator West pointed out the unconstitutionality of these taxes as per Buren and suggested this will be challenged in court. This is not only an attempt to punish law abiding gun owners, but it seems it is an attempt to remove firearms from our state by hindering the businesses who sell firearms. They will leave and go to neighboring no tax or less tax states. Maryland wants no guns and this is a beginning. This bill establishes an ELEVEN (11) Percent firearm, firearm accessory, and ammunition (FFAA) excise tax on the gross receipts of a federally licensed firearms dealer derived from the sales of firearms, firearm accessories, and ammunition in the State. The bill takes effect July 1, 2025. It now goes to the House for a committee hearing, vote and then to the full House for a vote. Look out. This snowball is growingl.
