Where's the beef?
I will add this;oftentimes, especially in 9mm and .45 ACP, if the cartridge hangs up at the very end of the case gauge(goes almost all the way in), that may only mean the 'rim' of the case is a little munged. That is caused by previous extractions(remember, we are working with previously fired brass). I put those aside and test them in a barrel. If they plunk, they're GTG.
^ This!
Once I have my dies set for pistol, and the rounds plunk the intended barrel, I'm not checking my case gauges and barrel plunk anymore for the session. The next session, I'll check the first round out for COL, and if I notice a change, then I need to go through the process again. That is a rare occurrence. I haven't changed the die setup in my .45ACP tool head since I last changed powders. (nor used my case gauge and done a barrel plunk)
I went from checking every darned round with the case gauge and plunk when I first started reloading to what I've described above. I expect the OP will do something similar as his comfort level improves.
