I dug my angry little HK 51 clone out from the back of my safe to try to keep this thread alive...

I'm a fan of the K length (I like bipods.) Below are my 32K and G3K. But I do need a 51 eventually for the shock and awe factor.
Keen observers will note that the 32 is notched for an AK drum :) There is also a 'Ub' training bolt in the G3K for the blue DAG plastic ammo. Its a hoot especially w/ a 50rd drum. 5.56 recoil, noise of a 308, and cheaper than either. I haven't tried to run that ammo through an OSS suppressor yet (need to change the muzzle device.) Maybe this weekend at the year end MDTCA event.

I don't like the fact that there is no way to lock the bolt open without using the last round hold open feature with a magazine inserted. The bolt release only works one way (to drop the bolt). I have never had a reason to clear a malfunction as mine has run perfectly so far. I am also not trying to shoot in sand storms or crawl through mud with it either.

The trigger isn't bad for a bullpup, that being said, it's horrible compared to any conventional rifle. LOL The trigger feels a lot like the one on my Sig 556. Huge amount of take-up, slight wall, then a little mushy creep, followed by a nice 4-5lbs brake.

One of the features that I have not seen on many reviews is the small metal bracket that is just behind the charging lever is a forward assist. You push down on the bracket and it pins the charging handle to the bolt carrier so you can push it forward if needed. I haven't had to use it yet, but it is nice to know it's there.

The safety selector seems awkward if you are accustomed to using ARs but this is not an American rifle and it has been limited to semi-only selections. I would not doubt if the after-market industry corrects this soon enough.

The one outstanding thing is I counted no less than ten sling attach points. Five on each side of the rifle. With so many, I may have missed a few. It's crazy!

The adjustable stock seems wild to me. It already looks like it's got a very long length of pull. You'd have to be 7 foot tall to want to pull that stock back any more. Any third party people have a shorter stock option that loses the adjustability? It seems like you could eliminate adjustability and shave the length down by a good 2 inches.

The buffer goes back into the stock on a Hellion. I'm not sure you can shorten it much.
Also, you need the telescoping feature to meet MDs 29" law.

If you SBR an ordinary PTR-91, can that accept one of those 8.5" uppers? Can it be 19" O
You mean can you meet MD's 29" rule w/ a HK51? You should be able to. A 51 typ has an 8.5" bbl like a MP5 but it has a longer receiver. W/ an A2 fixed stock like Waingro shows, I think you'll be around 30". Waingro, what does yours measure exactly? Looks like its a PTR and they use 8.5" bbls. (Some manufacturers use 8.1")

And you typ don't want to SBR a 91. Pressing in & pinning a new barrel would be the easy part. Then you have to cut and weld on a different cocking piece and refinish the gun. Then your bolt carrier needs to be completely replaced. Add a different locking piece in the bolt. Obviously a different handguard too. Its a ton easier (and likely cheaper) just to buy a PTR 51P pistol, Form 1 SBR, and engrave and add the stock when its approved.

Here's my Daniel Defense M4A1 with a heavy SOCOM-profile barrel to make it MD-compliant. Last year, I decided to set up this gun as a clone of the rifle from the "Sicario" movies (because I'm a big fan) - reference picture from "Sicario: Day of the Soldado" attached. It's not an especially practical or modern setup (by 2020s standards), but I liked how it looked in the movie and thought it would be a unique (and fun) clone project.

    Parts used:
    - Daniel Defense M4A1 w/ SOCOM barrel (from Brownell's)
    - EOTech 553 in flat dark earth
    - Surefire M720V RAID (black) w/ ST07 pressure pad/switch
    - Troy Battle Sights
    - Daniel Defense vertical grip (NOTE: movie gun has either a TangoDown or KAC vert grip, depending on film)
    - Radian Raptor charging handle (NOTE: movie gun has a regular USGI charging handle)
    - Magpul ladder rail covers in flat dark earth

Before I did this clone project: The gun was fitted with my Aimpoint PRO, an FDE Surefire 600DF, and Daniel Defense fixed sights.

My old SOCOM II with CSSPECS 30 round steel magazine. So far Texas is still a free state.

I fail to find anything "impractical" here. You run what you like.
