And now I'm irritated. I took the quiz as an open-book quiz using the policy and I got two wrong answers. Seriously?

Screw that - I guess I won't bother to shoot steel at AGC, which sucks because I kind of wanted to.

Do they tell you which questions you got wrong? I was looking at taking the test, but just sitting in my browser section completed . There are couple questions that I probably got wrong.

So after the 3rd time, it’s ban for life. It would be cool to shoot steel, but $120 for fee and target == to about 200 12x18 splatter target I use. But it would be cool to shoot steel.

No - there's no hint at what you got wrong, only that you didn't pass, and they give you your score.

Like I said, if they want to be dumb about it with trick questions and questions that can't be answered directly from the policy itself, I don't want any part of it.

Those trolley target bases are owned by the training companies, they are not there for the general members. I took a carry class at IOTA, they have two of them set up pretty much all the time. You can build your own and use it .

Doesn’t sound very convenient. I’m more interested in being able to show up, attach my target, and be able to run it out and back. For the range fees charged, an overhead pulley system is an expectation on a pistol range. It doesn’t have to be fancy - something like Hap Baker’s is fine. Doesn’t seem like it would cost too much to install a few.

So here's an interesting one that I'm dealing with just tonight. I'm studying to take the AGC steel target certification quiz. The "fun" part is that the questions on the quiz don't align with the material presented in the policy itself. I hate that. I think the test is designed so that the taker has to take it at least twice to get a passing score.

One example is talking about minimum and maximum muzzle velocity allowed. Nowhere in the policy is a minimum muzzle velocity discussed, only maximum, and there are allowable exceptions for the maximum, so what's the correct answer?

There's one question that specifically mentions the ballistic energy of the 357 Sig, but 357 Sig isn't mentioned specifically in the policy, so unless you know your cartridges, it's a question that's specifically designed to confuse the quiz taker, which is kind of BS - the quiz really should match the policy, and the creators of the policy want you to know the ballistic energy of the 357 Sig, then maybe they should write it into the policy.

Another confusing "answer" is talking about ammo prohibitions and specifically mentions centerfire cartridges designated as "Magnum". Ok - great. So you can't shoot bottleneck rifle magnum rounds, but you can shoot 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, etc - they are designated as magnum, but are within the muzzle velocity requirements, so which is it?
    How Bout .22 "Magnum" ?

This is a pretty good summation of the situation at AGC. I'm a member, I volunteer at events, I enjoy it, but it does have limitations. Being able to individually rent out an action bay on a weekday would be a big improvement, in particular.

Only if you're a member of a charter club. Perhaps the biggest long-term problem that AGC has is that the clubs are not apportioned representation by membership numbers. It's "the charter clubs get to vote, everyone else gets to talk". Some of the charter clubs are cool, but some are, we'll say, demographically problematic to embracing newer shooting trends.
That's true. I only belonged to Charter clubs and didn't think about it before posting.

I had a membership in 2021. I really enjoyed shooting there. I always got a kick out of the hardcore bench rest guys. 1 round every 5 minutes. Talk about it for 5 minutes then soot again. 3 rounds per cease fire!
I ended up moving to the upper Carroll County area so I didn't renew. There are some places up this way so I try to stay local. I might end up back there someday.

AGC has raised the prices to try to pay more and keep RSO’s from leaving. I’ve been a member about 12 years, and I love it. In that time they added steel shooting, holster certification, the action shooting bays and it keeps getting better in my opinion. Our club is $20/year plus the NRA requirement, registering with CMP is part of the deal, and you gotta pay range fees to be a AGC member. I get my moneys worth by springtime, because I shoot alot. It’s only 20 minutes from my house in Ellicott City. I consider 10 to 12 trips the break even point I've been twice so far this year.
That's the story they are selling. It doesn't hold water though. The primary reason is to fund "special interests" and fund Byrant Cramer's fantasies, he sure does now how to spend. Certain groups are not governed by the RSO's from what I have been told by the RSO's and several trustees.

For those of you young men who wish to change things at the AGC, there is only one sure way. That is to run for trustee of your club and get into the club management.

Yes, it takes more of your time and can be frustrating at times. However, nothing worthwhile was ever said to be easy. ;)
Good luck with that! The good ole boys still have control. I was on the board of trustees for 10 years. VP of another club, served as XO of even another club.
Funny how they don't mention the surplus funds they have, $400,000.00 from what I was told by trustees. There are more issues but, I will not air them here for the present.

I guess Ralph's still controlling the AGC from the grave.

Hello - I am a member of the AGC RSSOP committee, and we had the quiz updated about 6 months ago or so when the steel target policy was updated. When I saw your comments I did some digging and it appears that there are a few bad links on the website that will still take you to the old quiz, which I can understand why you would be confused at the questions. The issue is being brought to the attention of IT and will hopefully be resolved shortly.

Please use the link to the current quiz, which is found under the training section on the site: https://agcrange.org/quiz/steel-target-certification-quiz-2022/

There is no intention for there to be trick questions, just questions to ensure that you read and understand the rules. I don't think any attempts at the old quiz will be held against you, but if you have problems please let me know and we can get it resolved.

Can you point us toward who can clarify the "magnum" issue with regard to handgun rounds and steel? Ok or not to shoot .357 Magnum on the pistol range? Should clock less than 1500fps. How about next to the guy shooting 2800 fps .30-06 at steel on Barnes?

    .327 Magnum? 41 magnum? 44 magnum?

This question seemingly won't go away. It has been a question for (literally) 6 years now.

Here is what the current policy says on ammunition:

    F. Ammunition to be used when shooting at Steel Targets
    1. Pistol Caliber Ammunition (applies to Reduced Range Targets of Less than 40 yards)
    a. Centerfire: up to .45 caliber and shall not exceed 1,500 feet per second
    b. Rimfire: Any round with a muzzle velocity of less than 1500 fps
    2. Rifle Ammunition (applies to Full Range Targets on the 100 yard / 200 yard ranges as well as of 40 yards or greater for scheduled events on the Shooting Bays and 200 yard range)
    a. Centerfire: Muzzle velocity shall not exceed 3,150 feet per second
    i. Exception: Frangible ammunition with a muzzle velocity of greater than 3,150 is acceptable
ii. See II.F.5 below for specifically prohibited ammunition b. Rimfire: All rimfire rifle ammunition is permitted on Full Range Targets

    ...

    5. Prohibited ammunition
    a. Tracer and incendiary
    b. Armor piercing, steel/tungsten core projectiles. This includes but is not limited to M855/SS109, M855A1, and 7N6 cartridges
    c. Buckshot, and Steel Shot
    d. 50 BMG and all long-range tactical rounds are prohibited
    e. Centerfire bottleneck rifle cartridge labeled “magnum”

I would recommend anyone who shoots steel there and hasn't read the updated rules to check them out

It's the best range in Central Maryland.

If you're an MSI member, you're already eligible to buy a range badge, which gives you full access to all facilities 364 days a year. Shoot all day and never have to wait for a position. It's extremely close to your house. What the hell are you asking about? Join!

Stay away from that place. It's a cult. They practice mind control and harvest your organs.
Oof. Why did this have to be the first reply I saw lol

About the only downside I find there is the mud. I'm not a fan of carrying targets down to the 100 yard line and slogging through it.
I went there one time with a friend, and we went to the handgun range. He brought a stand, and paper, and we walked it out to shoot at. Is that how it is on the different ranges there? You bring your own stuff and walk it out?

Most ranges I’ve been to will have that problem during rainy season. I don’t really care though. There’s so much grass you don’t really sink. I used to belong there but moved to TCSC for the 300 yrd range but I’ll be back this year.
    What is TCSC?
