I have been a member for over 20 years. Like others here, the only issue I have is with the availability of the shooting bays. I feel the membership was mislead about the availability and usage when the Trustees voted to fund the project. Even now, the proposed plinking bay (#7) is not really functional as range (IMO).

Other than that, it is a great place to shoot. You have over 30-some clubs to join. Many of us belong to more than one club. I joined Monumental Rifle and Pistol Club over 20 years ago and have served as secretary and president. I also serve as secretary of the Maryland State Rifle and Pistol Association which uses the AGC as its home range.

It seems like it’s the same old same old since I first considered joining. I’m not a fan of politics and bickering.
The bickering and politics are only there if you choose to get involved in them. I have been a member since 1981. I saw the BS first hand and decided I didn't need the hassles of being involved. So I bitch about it about the BS, but dont do anything about it. I just shoot there. Hell I even bought a 20 year badge when the sold them to fund the action bays. I have yet to step foot in one of them. Point is that you don't need to get to get involved in it.
It is a good old boy network as stated, but still a nice place to shoot.

Agreed. If you just go there to shoot and stay out of the meetings, the only bickering or politics you'll see is on MDS ;)

i have been a member since 2012. i feel the same way about the action shooting bays. i thought the members would have access to them. but they are only used for events/matches. this is the only thing I would like to see changed and maybe lower the dues

I haven't been a member there for a few years but that 200 yard range was nearly impossible to get onto during the weekends when I was going there.

I haven't been a member there for a few years, either. When I was, I almost never saw anyone -- including an RSO -- on the 200 on weekdays.

I almost always shot with a friend there in case of any type of accident. Also a random person on the road is closer to your gear than you are when you're down range.

Lol, seriously? They even give you the chapter where the information is located.
A bit further up in the thread a member of the AGC RSSOP committee posted that I had gotten linked to the old version of the quiz, which is why it didn't align, and also why it didn't tell you the questions you got wrong. They posted a link to the newer version of the quiz.

I just took it, passed it, and paid the steel shooting certification fee, so the next time I go to AGC, I'll be renewing my membership and buying steel target, unless I can find something else that I like better elsewhere. Or, I'll get one from AGC now, and I'll pick up something else later - no one says you can't have more than one steel target.

I'm a happy camper - can't wait to start ringing steel out there - it's a lot more fun than punching holes in paper.

Does anyone know if you had a range badge in the past and didn’t get one for 2 years, do you need to do another range walkthrough orientation before getting another range badge?

What is going on with the plinking bay, is it planned/approved or still being discussed? that's the one that they have been talking about since the beginning that it would be open all the time for those with steel badges?

I get if you are a member of MSI than you have shooting privilege's at the range. My question do you still have to qualify or do a safety class or presentation?

Sorry in advance for the dumb question

SG is the one who did my orientation and walkthrough at AGC - he took time out of his day on short notice to get me hooked up because it was going to be weeks before I could make it to one of the Sunday morning walkthroughs because of my involvement with both the National Guard and my church's praise band. I'll always be thankful that he was gracious enough to get me set up an on my way.

He made me a deal - I was already a member of a different associated club, but that club didn't have people set up to do the walkthroughs, so he told me if I'd join MSI, he'd meet me at a time that worked for me. Done. I've been a member of MSI ever since.

Yes if you have not had an active range badge in 2yrs they require a re-orientation

Here's a question - maybe some folks here know what's what.

Now that I've completed my steel target certification and paid the license fee, given the requirements of the range for steel targets, what steel targets does AGC have available for purchase? Do they have all of the listed variants, (3/16, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and AR400/AR500) or am I better off finding something on my own rather than buying from the range?

To my knowledge, the range isn't really making any money on the targets they sell, or at least that's what was implied the last time I asked about it, so if they have what I want, I'll just buy it from them.

I believe the proceeds from the steel and target stand sales go to fund the JR programs. I bought a 3/8" silhouette Ar500 (I think) from them a few years ago. It has held up well. The nice thing is that it came ready to hump to down range. Has the holder and 2x4 ready to go. Most of 100 yard line has mounts to insert the 2x4. There are instructions and regs on bringing your own steel setups. Been plenty of "discussion" on here about them.
Make sure you have a spare 4' 2x4 with you. They get shredded easily.

That's probably what I'll do then - that seems to be the "Easy Button" approach.

At some point I'll want to get a free-standing target stand, and I think I'll look into something modular that won't get torn up by splatter and fragments - the noted "manufactured and purpose built from AR500 steel." that's mentioned in the AGC Steel target policy.
