A character death due to poor gun maintenance was written into the plot of CSI: Miami

Despite his skill as a CSI, Speedle was habitually neglectful of gun maintenance ("Dispo Day"), which when it happened the second time around, contributed to his death when his gun jammed during a shootout ("Lost Son,").
    • Having learned that Speed's gun jammed during the gunfight, Horatio gives him a gun cleaning kit as a late birthday present. This foreshadows Speed's death in "Lost Son" due to his gun malfunctioning from not cleaning it.
    I remember seeing that....

I guess it depends on interpretation of cleaning. Basic field strip/clean or full disassembly.

I field strip after each range visit. Clean barrel, wipe/brush out slide and exposed area of receiver, re-lube and reassemble.

Wasn't the CSI Miami issued Sigs? I've heard Sigs run 'wet' where as Glock run 'dry'? Do Sigs stop if not dunked in a bucket of oil? What do the legends say?

    See here for this character:

As I understand it, you don't want to over-lube any gun as it will collect soot/dirt at critical function points and could seize up as a result.

FWIW for me: The firearm I carry is always clean/cleaned and lubed before I carry it. I wouldn't trust or have it any other way.
You know it functioned properly at the range. How do you know it will function properly after you have field stripped it?

    Food for thought.

Because it always functions without issue for my next weekly range trip after I clean/lube it.

That, and I also do a function check per the manual each time after cleaning/lubing it.

    It's always ready to go.

But alas, some folks here are still looking for reasons NOT to clean their guns. :sad20:

When I shot at the last Gun Commander class, I used one of the two guns I carry. No misfires. Put it in the holster and carried it the rest of the day. Ran a bore snake down the barrel when I got home, a little oil on the rails, and put it back in the holster.

I don't see the problem here. I also know the gun functions. Mechanical things don't always cooperate. You do you.

    Thank you.

For something that my life will ultimately depend on every time I carry it, I make the time and do it properly. I know it's going to work when I need it to. It's really difficult for me to understand why anyone would choose to take shortcuts on this. You don't get a do-over if/when SHTF.

I couldn't put a dirty gun back in a safe. You get into that practice, you forget what's been fired often and when was the last time you actually cleaned it.

Rode hard and put away wet. The horror...
