you still need to overcome the delay system to rack it. That might be why it doesn't reduce weight/recoil as much as a delay system that locks at the bolt/receiver. The best would be a roller delay BCG like the Mean arms design, where the charging handle pulls on the carrier, so no added force, and the bolt locks in the upper to be the most efficient, even better if it doesn't need a buffer tube at all, and is contained entirely in the upper.
Yeah, the Taccom magnetic delay buffer had a lot of the same behavior. Annoying, but not a big deal for a grown adult.

yea, kinda feels like it, but not as stiff as the Taccom. I shot one of those one time at a match, it felt kinda harsh, not as smooth as my Blitzkreig, but was lighter. It uses some added magnetic resistance, but not a ratio of increased mass acceleration relative to the bolt head.

The Taccom magnetic buffer really didn't work for me. Early unlocking, felt weird. I returned it. The idea had promise, and it's possible that the newer gen2 version provides fixes for that.

problem is, it's like running a heavier spring, all that resistance doesn't really do anything to change timing, only increased mass/inertia actually slows the huge force over a very short distance that occurs with blowback. Delayed blowback is like starting a car in 3rd gear, which actually delays it, the bolt blows back a little, the carrier accelerates faster than the bolt due to leverage from the wedge, and the added mass/acceleration slows it. CMMG's RDB uses the angled lugs to turn the cam pin, and force the carrier back at a rate greater than the bolt head is moving, that mass then unlocks and inertia takes it through the rest of the cycle, it is a true delayed blowback, but is finnicky, and friction of the lugs makes a difference. The magnetic delay is kinda like tying a small rope to the bumper, then stomping on the throttle in first, sure it might resist a little bit of the energy, but the rope snaps, and the car goes flying with little difference. it's not actually delaying anything.

    I bought one…

I have a 22” pre-‘13 9mm Colt-Pattern AR. I have a need to make this gun run as smoothly as possible.

It feels much like the JP roller delayed JP5, although the JP5 still was probably smoother and less recoil, but I don't have one, and been a couple months since I tried one.
I have a JP5 if you ever want to do some side by side comparisons sometime. Just let me know.

Mean Arms got back to me this week. Looks like they are finally going to deliver their roller delayed upper. Charged my card on Thurs so maybe it will be here next week. Will inform when it arrives. We need to schedule a get together at AGC to compare. Who is in? I could bring:
    1) Mean Arms 4.5"
    2) CMMG RDB 5"?
    3) MP5 9"
    4) MP5K 4.5"
    5) I've got an old blowback setup w/ a Colt BCG and crazy heavy 9mm buffer somewhere around here. (Haven't used this in ages and would have to find/install a Colt mag adapter as all my Endomags are the version w/o the ejector.)
6/7) Could dig out the MPX & CZ Evo rifles too.
    8) Edit: a M11 w/ tungsten bolt would be an interesting comparison too

Who's got a Maxim roller delay buffer gun and a JP they want to bring out?

I don't see another MDTCA event scheduled until Sep 10 though (and its on the 100yd range) :( Might have to see if we can schedule a quickie on the pistol range sometime before then. My schedule looks free on the Sep 2-3 weekend (most weekday afternoons are open too.) Or head out to DSC. Who's interested?

    I have a CMMG RDB 8” (I think it’s 8”).

Still waiting on Maxim to deliver my RDB kit.

I also have a 5” Colt with a 9Q heavy buffer and 308 Tubbs spring. I could bring that.

    I’d be interested in this.

are there specific bolts this will not work with?
Has to be a 1 peice body with pinned weight(most current designs). 2 peice BCGs without a removeable weight won't work.(Aero, early NFA). The guide rod has to be able to go into the tail of the carrier like the JP SCSS buffers.

Had one from the i initial batch arrive in 2 weeks at the end of june, then ordered more, been over 2 months, should be shipping this week. They told me they thought it would be popular, so they made a few hundred, which sold out in a couple days, they have orders for thousands now. Said they machine them in-house, won't lower standards, won't stop taking orders, won't farm out production, and got a couple new machines to help, but they are swamped, and new machines take time and people to set up. They also are a plaintiff in the brace rule lawsuit with the FPC, so hopefully some of their sucess helps fund a win there.

Mine also shipped yesterday. Looking forward to playing with it.

I'd also like the MEAN Arms upper, but one thing at a time.

I'm still waiting on the Mean Arms upper to ship :(
I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this when you get it.

That's good to know. Your review was the impetus for my order. I need to test fire and sight in a few recent purchases, so will most likely get out this weekend.

I'm going to let smdub be the guinea pig on the MEAN upper. Looks intriguing.

I've got a old school direct blowback 11.5" (colt mags), a Scheels AR9 in 5", a CMMG RDB in 5".

I went on Maxim two days ago to cancel my delayed buffer and got a shipped notice the next day. Lol!

I'd be up for the AGC meet-up, but I'd have go as someone's guest.

I ordered a Springfield LevAR, since I heard it helps with pulling the bolt back on these due to the levering mechanism.

I'll be interested in your review. The bolt is definitely tight with the Scheel system I have.
